NRC denies Scott petition to halt Morris nuclear shipments

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission refused the Nebraska attorney general William Scott's request to halt shipments of spent nuclear fuel to General Electric's Morris storage site and denied a new environmental impact study. The NRC said proper steps were taken to convert the plant from reprocessing to storage and rejected labeling Morris storage as long term or high level waste. Eugene Voiland stated the contained spent fuel is well managed and easier to handle than reprocessed fuel.

Appraisers differ on land value in Grundy County case

In a Grundy County Circuit Court condemnation suit over land for the Illinois 47 project, Ottawa appraiser Truman Esmond testified the Joliet property owned by Joseph Giglietti is worth 44 200 as of December 15 1975. Other experts cited included William Fleming surveyor and Tadrowski real estate appraiser who valued the lot around 25 000 to 27 000 with varying frontage and zoning details.

Morris Man Named Officer in Charge at Minooka Post Office

George Gordon of 110 Woodland Rd Morris has been named officer in charge of the Minooka Post Office after Postmaster Raymond Ruth retired Dec 31. Gordon began in 1963 as a substitute clerk carrier, became delivery foreman in 1974, and later Yorkville superintendent of operations in 1976. He holds postal management and processing training and lives with wife Nancy and three children in Marseilles born family.

Program on Cuban tour by Minooka pastor at district meeting

The Rev. Gregory Dell of Minooka United Methodist Church shares experiences from a Cuba education al tour with 23 religious journalists and leaders. He will present slides at the Grundy County Soil and Water Conservation District annual meeting on Jan. 19 followed by a business session and director elections after a 6:30 p.m. dinner at the Morris church. Tickets are available from S.W.C.D. directors and the ASCS office.

Board Accepts 18000 For Center School Land Take

Morris District 54 Elementary School Board after a 20 minute executive session voted to accept the transportation department offer of 18000 for a land strip at Center School to be taken when Illinois 47 is widened. The 3 048 square foot strip runs along Division Street between Benton and Chapin Streets and includes a 25 foot triangle on Benton. Attorney Eugene Hayes negotiated the deal. An architect from South Holland, Harold Jacobs, outlined plans for new offices on the gym stage and discussed wall options and costs while detailing six rooms on the stage and the need for air conditioning. Jacobs estimated office remodeling at about 40000 with cost uncertainty.

Grundy County Board approves tax computer service bid

The Grundy County Board authorizes a $20,000 one year computer tax service and a $5,000 appropriation for sheriff department security gear including TV monitor camera walkie talkie and repeater. The board also denies printing tax lists claims totaling $11,068.90 and approves various budget and payroll moves. Caterpillar buys former Quasar plant site in Pontiac for engine component production with 100 new jobs expected by year end.
