Morris district board studies unit district feasibility

The Board of Education voted 4-0 with one abstention to hire Illinois School Consulting Service for a feasibility study on forming a unit district from Nettle Creek 24-C Morris 54 Saratoga 60-C and Morris High 101. Dieringer and Barr reported state aid gains, a petition gathered 343 signatures, and land and staffing moves were discussed.

Chicago Teachers Strike Shuts Over 500000 Pupils Out

Chicago public education for more than 500 000 pupils halted as 21 000 teachers walked off amid a dispute with the Chicago Board of Education. Gov Daniel Walker failed to broker a relief agreement after a Springfield meeting. Schools Supt James F Raymond ordered 660 Chicago public schools closed. CTU president Robert Healey declared the strike on and said they are ready to proceed.

Sniper Essex Identified as Kansas Man on New Orleans Roof

Police named Mark J. Essex, 23, of Emporia Kansas as the sniper killed on a hotel rooftop after six people died and 17 were wounded in a New Orleans shooting spree. Ballistics linked a .44 magnum carbine to Essex and to earlier New Year's Eve incidents. Authorities consider a possible conspiracy with other snipers, while Essex’s minister described a militant hatred of whites.

Weather drought slams cattle in plains states

The Associated Press reports about 50,000 cattle dead in Oklahoma Kansas and Texas as severe cold and winds threaten more losses. Deaths in feedlots reach three percent and up to 15 percent on wheat pasture. Cattle die from snow covering forage, starvation, pneumonia, and related diseases. Cattlemen fear a hard wind could wipe out thousands more.

Grundy County Board OKs rights of way and grand jury draw

The Grundy County Board approved right of way for General Bell Telephone lines in Garfield and Greenfield Townships and voted to cover $40,236.74 in claims. 23 grand jurors and 20 supplemental jurors were drawn by lot. lists will be issued soon. Remodeling for Grundy County Home expansion is complete. Health Department finances show $66,698.18 expenditures and $49,113.16 receipts, costing $17,585.02 to the general fund. Adjournment set for Feb 13. The tax committee rebid 20 industrial and 400 commercial properties. United Appraisal Co., of Kansas City, won at $18,000 with work due by Sept 1. Committee members are Wollgast, Waters, Boss, Hauschild, and Mosimann.
