In downtown New Orleans, a massive police cordon held a hotel after two surviving snipers began a marathon attack, leaving seven dead and 17 injured. A Marine helicopter hovered with sharpshooters as the hotel remained deserted and streets were blocked. authorities pursued a federal probe, with police cautious to avoid further fatalities.
Daniel Walker, a 50 year old corporate lawyer, sworn in as Illinois 36th governor amid cold winds on the Statehouse steps. He pledges to sweep bureaucratic arrogance and restore faith in government, with accountability sessions and a return to towns, farms, and cities. The ceremony featured 2000 chairs, marching bands, and joint appearances with Republican predecessors.
In Paris Kissinger and Le Duc Tho met for four+ hours at a suburban villa as bombing raids from Nixon halted above the 20th parallel. The atmosphere was strained with no handshakes or greeting from Hanoi officials. No agenda or next meeting date was announced.

Evanston Hospital reports the Baer quintuplets born Friday to James and Lynn Baer of Northbrook are progressing. The firstborn Even Thomas Allen, previously with respiratory issues, is fed orally and receives oxygen only occasionally. The babies were moved from Highland Park Hospital to Evanston, a center for premature infants, while the father shuttled between hospitals. Dr. Melvin Cohen of Fertility Institute Ltd. noted daily Perganol treatment before pregnancy and limited details beyond general outcomes.
The Morris Community High School board will inspect the installation of new lockers at the January meeting starting at 7 30 p m in the administrative offices. A 6 30 p m pre tour visit to the English Department is open to the public. Reports will cover inter district curriculum progress by assistant superintendent Ted Morgan state purchasing plan by business manager Charles Dieringer Jr and status of negotiations. Information from District 54 on unit district and a letter from Grundy County Chamber of Commerce will be provided.
In a night of heavy gunfire against snipers on the Downtown Howard Johnson Hotel roof, a Marine Sikorsky helicopter provided a gun platform for police sharpshooters. After 20 passes, they found several bullet holes but no major damage and finally forced a bunker breach with AR15 fire.
Three inmates used a ruse to get a guard to open a cell door at Jefferson County Jail in Mount Vernon Illinois. They overpowered the guard. Sheriff Dayton Harlan was struck and his wife aided in the surrender. Capps, 28, began a three to six year sentence for armed robbery at Menard State Prison. Deimer, 26, was captured soon after for parole violation in Arkansas. Styles, 34, was found hours later in an asphalt office while awaiting transfer from Kentucky. A fourth inmate, 17, George Jones, was released on recognizance after aiding the escape and is charged with theft.
Coventry resident Jean Haynes, 22, who had been nearly deaf since birth, attributes her sudden hearing to a powerful sneeze that unblocked a middle ear tube. Doctors say the head-jerking sneeze restored her hearing but she now struggles with sleep due to the newfound noise in her environment.
John D. Strickland owner of the Coast to Coast Store at 320 Liberty St reported to Morris police at 11:35 a.m. Saturday that a Hawes six shot .22 caliber revolver was stolen from his shop during the holidays.
The Morris Grade School Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Franklin School to review life safety work and an executive special education meeting. Other items include a Lakewood Estates school ordinance to go to the Morris City Council and a discussion of an insurance bid affecting bonding personnel and district purchasing. Coal City Police Chief Allan J. Conant was admitted to St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet New Year's Day for tests.
Kendall County Circuit Court Judge Robert Sears scheduled preliminary hearings for murder, armed robbery, and theft suspects Carl Riemann and Betty Piche on January 25 and 26. Riemann faces a fifth murder count tied to bartender John H. Wilson’s death. Separate vs combined hearings were debated. Sears granted separate proceedings. The courtroom was crowded with about 40 people and security searches were conducted.
Commonwealth Edison Co paid 5000 for permits to build the Collins generating station east of Morris with transmission terminals and storage facilities. Estimated construction cost listed at 16325000. County records show additional permit to Morris H Wash of Joliet for a single family residence in Felix Township, paid 54.72, issued December 29.
