Fatal collision on Illinois 23 between Ottawa and Grand Ridge

A three-vehicle crash near Grand Ridge Cemetery on Illinois 23 in LaSalle County killed three people and injured one. The SEMI driver Hubert Cupples of Ohio was in fair condition. Victims include pickup driver Terry J. Schmitt 21 of Tonica and passengers William Gourley Jr. 21 and Ronald Wargo 20. Traffic blocked as investigators determine cause amid wet icy roads. Saigon with AP reports the US confirms another B52 and another F111 shot down as air raids on Hanoi and Haiphong push American casualties to 109 in two weeks. South Vietnamese command notes 116 enemy attacks, 82 rocket and mortar strikes, and four civilians killed with 43 wounded.

Bomb threat forces jetliner to divert to Denver

A jumbo jetliner from Madrid with 223 aboard was diverted from Kennedy to Denver after a telephone bomb threat. A TWA spokesman called the call an extortion threat and said it appeared to be a hoax. The Boeing 747, TWA Flight 903, left Madrid at 5:20 a.m. EST and was to arrive in New York at 12:25 p.m. EST.

A windy colder day with light snow flurries and steady to falling temperatures. Tonight partly cloudy and colder with lows 10 to 15. Friday remains cloudy and cold with a high in the upper 20s. Wednesday's high reached 40 at Dresden Island Locks Dam and the low 18. At 7 am Morris read 18 and 10 am 22 with .66 precipitation noted.

Viet Nam bombs Hanoi in mass strikes report

North Viet Nam said in a preliminary survey 1,318 people were killed and 1,261 wounded by U S bombing raids on Hanoi last month. Over 10 days ending December 29 American planes conducted more than 1,000 sorties including 500 B52 attacks, dropping 40,000 tons of bombs on 353 places. The An Duong workers area was obliterated on December 21 with 600 bombs destroying 200 homes and affecting 1,500 children’s facilities. 135 killed and 126 wounded there. Kham Thien Street, attacked December 26 by 30 B52s, razed 534 houses and damaged 1,200, with 215 killed and 257 wounded. Hai Phong city also reported 250 civilian targets hit.

Probation Given to Two Boys in Torture Case

Barges Block Illinois River Near Stratton Park

At 5:55 a.m. police observed three barges lashed side by side loose on the Illinois River near Stratton Park. They were lodged sideways, blocking the channel with ends against both banks. Two light poles at the Stratton Park launching ramp were damaged. The tug Arrow removed the barges and tied them up on the west side of the bridge.
