A night rider known as Mr S Claus ignores laws with an unlit sleigh box on winter routes. Authorities note the risk of crime in darkness while Smokey Bears are overlooked and his wife buys him a citizen’s rig to monitor channels from one to twenty with many helpers tonight.
Adele Redmond and Michele Roberts won first in the young adult division for a nativity display in the Minooka Christmas decorating contest sponsored by the Minooka American Legion. The Infant Jesus model was later reported stolen from the Nativity scene in front of Minooka Food Mart. Brownie Troop 48 won first in the children’s division with a decoration at K and F Decorating near the Minooka fire station.
Three condemnation suits filed in Grundy County Circuit Court by Dome Pipeline Co against landowners seek just compensation for permanent easements and a 50 foot right of way for a 12 inch hydrocarbon pipeline. The route runs from the Mississippi near Albany Illinois to the Indiana border near Kankakee. Defendants include Robert Barr Marion Barr William Barr and William Norton along with Lucius Gorham Aileen Hendrix and the Federal Land Bank of St Louis and Dave and Venita Barr. The easement stakes cover 3.72 6.13 and 0.65 acres on several township lines.
United Press International reports Northeasterners pray for snow while Northwest residents dance in Klamath Falls Oregon for drought relief. A ski shop operator and six disc jockeys joined a crowd as storms promised some snow showers.
Alderman Wilson Frost says he has acted as mayor since Mayor Richard J. Daley died, plans a six month window for a special election. Frost cites Illinois law and precedents, with support from organizer Augustus Savage affirming Frost as the designated successor.
Kenneth Kennedy filed to run for Morris mayor as the sole Democratic candidate. Incumbent Donald Davidson and Republican Lee Wilkinson also filed petitions. First Ward Alderman Del Linn, a Republican, filed for mayor, while Joseph Brochman seeks fourth ward alderman. The final filing day is Monday.
Kendall County taverns may stay open all night on New Year Eve under a no closing time order granted by County Board Chairman Robert Cherry. The sheriff's department warns of increased hazards that can be reduced by this exception for liquor license holders.
The Minooka Village Board meeting scheduled for Monday is cancelled. The next regular meeting will be January 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the village hall.
A 25 year old Minooka woman Linda Hand was shot in the upper right leg at about 1 50 am in a Rockdale tavern. Police say the shooting is accidental but a warrant was issued for Walter Bow 40 of Reed Road to be arrested. Witnesses say Bow threatened to shoot his dog and fired a shot or shots. The gunman’s dog may have been with him. The tavern’s name was not released.
Stephen Wills, 22, rural Mazon, was arrested Wednesday by Grundy County deputies and MANS on a delivery charge. About a half pound of marijuana was seized and Wills faces additional pending charges and a $25,000 bond. Wills allegedly delivered PCP to a MANS agent in August. The sheriff reported a search of Wills' residence followed the arrest.
John A. Herubin of 747 East North Street retires from the Morris Post Office after 28 years with the U S Postal Service and 33 years total public service counting WWII Army Air Force service. He earned a Bronze and Silver Star in Europe and a 12 year Safe Driver award for 200000 miles accident free. He plans fishing and awaiting his first grandchild due in March. a successor will be named within six weeks per Postmaster William Martin.
