U S intelligence confirms 25 to 50 North Koreans in North Vietnam six to eight weeks in country. They fly from Hanoi bases and may mentor Hanoi crews though no engagements are confirmed. Officials caution against overreading the move as the war remains constrained.
Gov. Otto Kerner said Illinois will need 15 to 17 million dollars for land at the Weston atomic project site. He expects legislative approval and noted AEC surveys next year to define the exact area. He discussed open occupancy and equal opportunity programs for the Weston project and said a fair housing bill is being pursued.
New York AP reports Harper & Row will settle with Mrs. Kennedy along lines of Look magazine deal. The Look version of The Death of a President will serialize in four parts starting January 10 with deletions of personal passages to protect family privacy. Harper & Row plans a full 300,000 word book in April while Mrs. Kennedy withdraws suit.
District Director Lorraine W. Harney of the INS says about 230000 aliens will file address reports in Illinois in January under the Federal Address Report Program. She noted 204107 did so in January 1966 and warned penalties for willful noncompliance.
Grundy County United Fund surpassed its 35000 goal with preliminary totals of 37150 after rural campaign completion. About 55 percent funds support youth character programs and activities. 25 percent to Grundy Red Cross for disaster relief and services. 15 percent to welfare and aged care. under 5 percent for expenses. Payroll deduction accounts for 65 percent. Funds fund 1967 agency operations. Red Cross follows its own fiscal year starting in April. This is the first combined county Community Chest and Red Cross drive.
An Ontario tractor trailer collided with a school bus near Windsor injuring thirteen and killing eight grade schoolchildren from Oldcastle and Maidstone. The driver Marcel LeFrancois faced charges of dangerous driving as rescuers freed victims trapped by sand and wreckage.
Pope Paul VI urged a miracle of goodwill to end the Vietnam war in a Christmas message appealing for negotiations. The World Council of Churches echoed calls for ceasefire and talks, while the Vatican prepared for the pope's Florence trip to aid flood victims and oversee relief funds.
A Wednesday night blaze at 280 W Addison Rd Villa Park Illinois destroyed a Topps department store. Damage was estimated at 1.5 million with about 80 firefighters from Villa Park and nearby suburbs assisting. Two firefighters were injured and treated at Elmhurst Hospital.

Jordanian officials say 5,276 Arab Christians from Israel will cross the Mandelbaum Gate into Jerusalem for Christmas. The annual crossing under U N supervision allows a restricted number to visit the holy sites, despite tensions and recent Jordanian unrest.
Ronald D. Schafer, 33, named managing editor of the Sterling Rock Falls Daily Gazette. The appointment by publisher Preston F. Grandon follows the death of former editor Robert Unzicker. Schafer has been city editor since 1964 and previously sports editor at the Morris Herald and city editor of the Lincoln Daily Courier. He is a University of Illinois graduate.
In Indianapolis police, aided by a police dog, tracked four men from a burgled grocery to a home where they fell through a ceiling and were taken into custody on preliminary burglary charges.

The November consumer price index rose by one tenth of a percent, the smallest increase in six months, as food prices fell seven tenths of a percent offsetting higher costs in housing apparel and medical care. The index reached 114.6, about 3.6 percent above the prior year. Meat eggs frying chickens and fresh fruit saw big drops. pork prices fell 10 percent while fresh vegetables cereals bakery items and restaurant meals rose. This marked the 10th straight month of rising living costs. Food price declines may reflect supermarket boycotts though officials say the impact is minor and not uniform across cities.
