Senate House negotiators reached a compromise on emergency energy powers for the president. Senator Paul J. Fannin objected, calling the plan unreal and unworkable and hinting at a filibuster to kill the bill. The profits provisions allow the president to set windfall profit guidelines with rebates delayed to Jan 1 1975 unless new law intervenes.
The cold spell follows the area's biggest snow storm with temperatures sliding from 28 at 7 am to minus 1 by late Thursday night. Ronald C. Brooks and James T. Airola both 19 received one year probation and $500 fines after pleading guilty to illegal possession of 10 to 30 grams of marijuana. If probation is completed without record, the case will be dismissed. Thomas Harty 17 of Algonquin faced charges later dismissed for lack of ownership. Brooks also fined $19 and $5 costs for improper lane usage.
Police Chief Dean Sager remained in Morris Hospital today, where doctors are running tests and X rays for abdominal pains after his condition was reported as stable.

Harold Boucier, 57, an electrician with the American Bechtel Co., was found dead in his pickup in the company parking lot at the Northern Illinois Gas project on Dresden Road Thursday evening. Coroner says heart condition caused death. body sent to Carlson Funeral Home Joliet with services planned in Danville Monday. Boucier survived by wife Madge, daughter Sharon Ludtke, two stepsons, 12 grandchildren, sister Mrs. Walter Elliott.
Prices for fuel electricity and food climbed 0.7 percent in November driving down purchasing power by 0.6 percent for the average worker. Heating oil up 10 percent and gasoline 4 percent pushed living costs, with cereal dairy and produce among the sharp food price rises.
McCook Nebraska police charge Harold Nokes 45 and Ena Nokes 44 with the murder of Wilma Hoyt 57 of Culbertson. Edwin Hoyt 56 presumed slain and dismembered. bodies found in Harry Strunk Lake after disappearance September 23. Witness Kay Hein cited as key in motive tied to a relationship with the Hoyts’ son-in-law.
United Press International reports travelers beginning holiday journeys encounter many problem spots on Illinois roads. Interstate 57 near Arcola and Effingham remains closed due to drifting snow with a detour. Temperatures are frigid across the state, 6 below at Springfield and 5 above at Rockford, with many highways snow packed and slippery.
The Morris Public Library will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. The City Clerk’s office will close at noon on those days and reopen at its usual time on the following Wednesday. Garbage collection for Tuesday routes will shift to the day after the holidays.
The Grundy County Court house will be closed Monday and Tuesday in observance of the Christmas holiday. A separate note mentions a sentiment about people’s dislike for television and staying up all night watching it.
