Grundy County Planning Commission met in the Farm Bureau building to discuss a 33 page draft zoning ordinance. Consultant Joseph Abel explained permitted and conditional uses and covered regulations for agricultural residential business and commercial districts.
A sudden flash fire at a Yonkers music classroom within a Jewish community center on the third night of Chanukah killed 12 people including nine children aged 7 to 11 and three adults. Fire officials said the blaze began in an auditorium on the second floor during renovations, with investigators unsure of the cause.
Sixty eight Grundy County men boarded a Rock Island train car for the Selective Service Center in Chicago. Twenty eight report for induction while forty others undergo pre entrance physicals though January calls show no inductions. Names include Alfred R. Jenkins James N. McCleary and others from Morris Coal City South Wilmington Kinsman Gardner Braceville and Marseilles.
Mor ris acquires its first snow clearing equipment a used 2 1/2 ton International truck with a medium snowplow purchased from the Illinois Highway Department. Mayor Aage Hansen notes council approved 1150 for the truck and 550 for the plow promising winter savings. Hans A Hexdall and Stanley Darling ton traveled to Springfield to bring back the vehicle.
Morris Public Library trustees met privately Monday night to discuss hiring a surveyor with Mrs. Gordon Gregg noting state funds were available. An objective analysis of current and future library needs would cost the community nothing if proper steps are taken soon, with an investigation planned before the January meeting to consider recommending a surveyor.
Morris area youths filled Santa letters with toys and personal notes. Names appear like David Slagle and Bobby with measles, Steve and Stanley Spear, Mark, Chris, Kathy Herman, and others listing trains, dolls, games, and special requests. Santa prepares to answer before Christmas Eve.
The Associated Press notes divergent winter predictions from caterpillars perches the moon and almanacs. Some forecast mild early weather while others expect bitter cold with heavy snow. Winter officially begins at 8 41 p m EST with Venus at peak brilliance and daylight at its minimum.
Mrs. Marvin Hougas Jr. of Miller Township LaSalle County posted a $5 000 property bond after being charged with arson tied to four fires at a farm tenanted by her husband. A preliminary hearing in magistrate court is set before the LaSalle County Grand Jury on Jan. 10.
U S planes pressed air raids toward Haiphong 12 miles from the port and hit the Yong Bi power station cutting a quarter of Haiphong’s and a third of Hanoi’s power. Navy strikes on a highway bridge north of Hai Phong scored five direct hits. Two MIG 17s were seen but did not engage. Three U S fighters were shot down by ground fire. one pilot rescued. In Di An near Saigon Viet Cong ambush freed two U S construction workers and a Vietnamese driver. a Dutch captive was killed.
The day brought cloudy skies and a vague sense of snow not forecast. Wednesday promises 40s warmth and Thursday is partly cloudy and mild. Collins Weather Station logged a 34 high and 27 low for Monday, 28 degrees at 9 am, with 0.05 inches of precipitation.
