Riot at Pontiac Prison Leaves Inmate Dead in Dining Hall
A dining hall brawl at Pontiac State Prison left Leon Kent, 22, of Rockford dead and six inmates injured. Herbert Steward, 22, of Chicago, was in critical condition with a knife wound. Warden John Petrilli cited an inmate on inmate clash between Vice Lords and Disciples gangs. About 30 inmates, all Black, were involved as guards used tear gas and locked down two cellblocks. James Gioletti, a unit manager, was treated for lacerations.

Icy fog triggers 23-car crash near Livermore
A chain reaction crash on Interstate 580 in Altamont Pass left 18 injured as dense fog and ice caused a 23 vehicle pileup.
