Economists predict no recession in 1979 here
Illinois Farm Bureau seminar heard economists expect inflation near 7 to 8 percent in 1979 with possible food price gains beyond that. Ted Tung of Continental Bank cited modest midyear slowdown but solid momentum and improving disposable income, employment, and a smaller trade deficit as factors keeping a recession unlikely. Butz tied food price rises to meat shortages and consumer demand, urging inflation controls rather than food price fixes.

Arson ruled out in fatal Southwest Side fire
In Chicago a fatal apartment blaze that killed seven people on the fourth floor was ruled not to be arson after investigators checked the building. Fire officials cited a fire starting on the third floor in a couch or Christmas tree, with missing smoke alarms and stolen batteries hampering early detection. The structure housed 10 apartments and two children, Jimmy Cruz and Amelia Cruz, were among the victims. Survivors noted many nonresidents stayed on the fourth floor, complicating victim identification.
