Farmers Bargaining Power and Its Use in Illinois
At the marketing conference linked to the 54th annual Illinois Agricultural Association meeting in Chicago November 18–21, experts discuss the potential and limits of collective bargaining for farmers. Dr. Sidney Hoos cautions that bargaining alone won’t fix American agriculture and urges regional analysis and skilled representation. L. L. Collins notes contract marketing growth, IPLA’s shift toward more contracted sales, and a goal of increased farmer–buyer discipline. Melvin Hanyana of Quality Producers Association explains how professional representation aids negotiations and aligns producer and processor interests for mutual gains.

Pharmacologists increasingly seek medicines from sea organisms. Marine algae produce antibiotics that inhibit terrestrial microbes, while octopuses release serotonin as a powerful histamine releaser, highlighting the ocean as a reservoir for potential therapeutics.
Farmer Cunningham Aims for World Class Corn Yield
Greenfield Illinois farmer Clarence Cunningham and his 190 acre operation set aside 40 acres for eight hybrids in five acre plots to push yields. He planted April 26 with two populations 37000 and 34000 per acre, heavy fertilization, weed control, and irrigation of nutrients totaling about 91 plus 6.50 per acre for chemicals. He hopes a 200 bushel per acre yield secures a new International pickup as FS Services will declare winners January 17.
