U Thant returns from Latin America to decide if he will seek another term as U.N. secretary general. Diplomats expect a nonrenewal after his current term ends Nov. 3, while others think he may stay on for two or three more years. A negative would trigger renewed diplomatic pressure.
Eight weary Roman Catholic nuns expelled from Red China arrived in Hong Kong. Sister Eamon aged 85 fainted during border crossing and was carried in a baggage cart. Mother Mary of the Cross aged 76 was hospitalized with fatigue. The other six rested at a convent. one nun used crutches from a past accident. They had been attached to Sacred Heart Academy in Peking run by the Franciscan Missionary of Mary.
President Charles de Gaulle held a 35 minute private meeting with Nguyen Thuong Hanoi’s top representative in Cambodia Thuong arrived Aug 25 and would not reveal details of the discussion French spokesman said the initiative came from both sides no peace negotiation indication exists De Gaulle meanwhile met Cambodian leaders and was named honorary supreme general of the royal armed forces by Prince Sihanouk in Bangkok Thai officials called Sihanouk’s accusation of armed men in Thailand a pure fabrication.
Weather Bureau forecast says Grundy County will stay sunny and warm with highs around 90 and a low in the upper 60s. Collins Weather Station records a 88 degree high and 57 degree low for Tuesday. Downtown Morris reads 74 at 9 am and 86 degrees at 11:30 am.
Cicero Illinois plans an open housing demonstration Sunday with National Guard protection sought from Governor Kerner. The march by about 1000 demonstrators will not face the usual 30 day permit wait to avoid violence, with CORE and other groups involved and possible King participation. Route runs west on 16th Street to Cicero Avenue then to 25th and Laramie.
Mayor Wilbert Smith of Benton Harbor declared a state of emergency amid two nights of racial violence. Gov. Romney refused an immediate National Guard call but sent 75 troopers under State Police. A protesting crowd sparked gunfire that killed an 18 year old Negro, with threats of more trouble. In nearby Waukegan curfew and evictions followed rioting and arrests.
Bids opened Tuesday in Chicago for the Morris Hospital addition came in about 300000 above the 1600000 estimate. C Iber of Peoria bid 1939000 and Walsh Brothers of Chicago bid 2212703. The trustees will study proposals and decide later.
Hurricane Faith roared in the open Atlantic hindering scientists from seeding the storm as Project Stormfury plans stalled. Forecasters still predicted a northwest or northerly track for the season's sixth tropical storm with the center about 430 to 450 miles east of Florida.
In Chicago Vinton W. Bacon superintendent of the Metropolitan Sanitary District testified as the county grand jury opened an inquiry into civil service exam cheating. He cited a bombing attempt on his car and credited investigators with uncovering massive fraud in the March 12 exams for operating engineers.
Federal mediator Edward Richards of Chicago has summoned a second meeting between Diamond National Corporation and Local 626 union representatives at 10 a.m. Thursday in Joliet. About 250 Local 626 members have been on strike for two weeks after a first meeting failed to break the deadlock. Picket lines have blocked the plant 24 hours a day since August 17.
