Sandwich Fair opens with Family Day and five day events
The 91st Sandwich Fair runs Wednesday through Sunday September 6 to 10 with Family Day on opening Wednesday. Children under 12 enter free, carnival rides at reduced rates, and open and junior show judging. Free grandstand entertainment features Sean Nielsen and Bobby and Cissy. Senior Citizens Day offers $1 admission after 5 p.m. Harness racing begins at 1:30 p.m. Highlights include Bargain Day Friday with carload cap of 3.50, junior livestock show Saturday, WGN noon show, tractor and truck pulls, antique auto show Sunday, and two automobile thrill acts. Daily Farm Zoo and exhibits accompany the fair with a Sandwich Fair Postal Station and a new west gate entrance off US 30. Grounds open 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., midways run until crowds depart. Carnival rides start about 1 p.m. Wednesday to Friday during school days.

Subcommittee charges gasoline shortage coverup
A House subcommittee charged the Department of Energy hid signals of a possible major U S gasoline shortage by 1980 amid the drive to lift price controls. The 134 page report faults DOE analyses and cites internal documents forecasting a 400000 barrel a day shortage, warning of higher prices and environmental harm from a switch to unleaded fuel.

Illinois raises hunting and fishing fees to fund better areas
Gov. James R. Thompson signed bills boosting resident hunting licenses from 3 to 7 and fishing licenses from 2 to 5, creating a combined sportsman's license at 11. Revenue, about 3.5 million, funds upgrades to hatcheries, river protection, pheasant nesting crews, and lands for hunting. A nonresident Lake Michigan fishing license for one day is included, with fees taking effect March 31, 1979 and full benefits by 1981.
