Mexico Earthquake Kills Over 600. Floods Worsen Rescue Efforts

A deadly quake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale struck Puebla Veracruz regions near Mexico City. At least 393 dead in Puebla and 92 in Veracruz with totals rising as isolated villages remained cut off. Ciudad Serdan Orizaba and Acapulco reported heavy losses. rescue workers faced rain and floods while President Echeverria planned a tour of the devastated area.

EPA probes oil spill at city sewer plant and school storage

EPA teams visited the Morris Community High School area after thousands of gallons of heavy black heating oil spilled from a storage tank. Plant operator Earle Bright said samples were taken and the final analysis would reveal effects on the digestion bacteria and creek impact, noting preliminary findings show Nettle Creek not damaged.

McHenry County residents oppose regional transit plan

McHenry County residents across Crystal Lake and nearby towns opposed a regional transit authority seeking tax revenue shares. Mayor Arthur Farrell warned counties would vote against the plan unless tax dollars benefited locals. State transportation secretary Langhorne Bond led hearings with about 300 attendees, while some favored subsidies and regional bus service to O’Hare and Elgin.

Weather Update Looks Hot and Humid With Heat Peaks Ahead

The forecast calls for mostly sunny skies with hot humid conditions today reaching the lower 90s. Tonight remains warm and humid with a low in the lower 70s. Thursday brings partly cloudy skies and highs in the lower 90s. Tuesday's high was 93 degrees at the Dresden Island Locks and Dam with a low of 68. At 7am today the temperature was 70 degrees and downtown Morris reached 87 degrees by 10:30am.

Judge shuts down Bull Island festival in Illinois

A Circuit Court judge enjoined Sound Incredible Inc. from staging the Bull Island rock and country music festival planned for Sept 2-3 in Carmi. The promoters did not attend. Creely warned the ruling could cost up to $75,000. Authorities cited missing permits and health-law violations.

James A. Loveland 17 of Mitchell Street Braceville was listed in fair condition at Morris Hospital after his car was forced off Illinois 113 into a soybean field at 4 40 p m.

Bids Open for Culvert Project Near Seneca Illinois

The Illinois Department of Transportation released bids due September 14 for a culvert under the Illinois and Michigan Canal about one mile east of Seneca in Grundy County. Deputy Sheriff Tim Neary reported Loveland’s 1965 Impala was forced off Illinois 113 by a large green dump truck three quarters of a mile east of Illinois 47. Loveland’s car fled into a soybean field, causing injuries. he was hospitalized at Morris Hospital.

Rezoning Hearing for Bower Home Sales Continues

The Grundy County Zoning Board of Appeals continued the petition to rezone 20 acres from Agriculture to B II citing absence of most members. Chairman Breisch urged a new hearing date before Sept 11 with Edward Walker present. The case ties to the Illinois 47 corridor study and follows a prior August postponement. Separately, Collins Properties withdrew a 40 acre rezoning for a rock quarry in Saratoga Township and the $100 fee was not refunded.

Bus agreement reached for Seneca area transportation

A temporary transportation contract for Seneca rural students was discussed at a joint meeting of the Seneca High School Board District 160 and Seneca Public Grade School District 170 with Whitey’s Bus Service owner O. G. White. A tentative agreement was reached with final approval expected at September board meetings.

Lisbon Labor Day Homecoming to Crown 1973 Queen

Lisbon marked its last summer holiday with the annual Labor Day Homecoming parade and festivities. The 1973 queen will be crowned as attendants ride a float, with judging at 9 30 a.m. The schedule includes a Newark 4-H vs Lisbon 4-H baseball game at 11 a.m. a soap box race at 12 30 p.m. water fights at 2 p.m. and sky divers at 3 30 p.m. A senior men’s game follows, and a Bethlehem Lutheran Church lunch and program feature Rev James Brooks as speaker. Master of ceremonies is Rev Ralph Chelsea.

Repainting Saint Statues by Hand at Morris Church

Robert Richardson finished refinishing the Stations of the Cross and two major statues at Immaculate Conception Church in Morris. The Holland-born painter, 51, claims to be the only U.S. artisan who repaints statues by brush, a craft he studied in Holland and Munich and now practices nationwide across 57 churches in the United States and Canada. During World War II he survived Belsen and served as an interpreter for the Allies Second Army. He prefers quiet work and welcomes visitors during limited hours at his studio.

Cooler air forecast as heat wave persists across Illinois

The Associated Press reports Chicago cooled to 74 before dawn at Midway Airport the lowest since Saturday but marks a fourth straight day of record high minimum temperatures. The eastern half of the nation endures 90 degree heat as a cooler front is not due until Thursday. Commonwealth Edison expects a new statewide kilowatt record but has no plans to curtail service.
