Heavy rainfall Friday and Friday night pushed water levels high across Morris Stratton and Gebhard Woods state parks closing roads and flooding homes. The Illinois River crest reached 13 feet above the lower pool then receded, with debris and washed-out sections on Southmor and Tabler roads. Civil Defense evacuated families and moved furniture to city hall while crews guarded flood sites and expected river levels to fall.

Two escapees recaptured from Pontiac honor farm
Two of three men who fled Pontiac State Penitentiary Sunday were found early today and returned. Michael Spaulding of Rock Island and Clyde Worthy of Decatur were spotted by a motorist and arrested without resistance. Worthy was serving two to ten years for robbery and Spaulding two to five for burglary. the third escapee, Robert Jording of El Paso, remains at large, serving one to seven years for burglary.
