The Morris Daily Herald reports August rainfall near Dresden Lock and Dam averaging an inch every three days. By Monday 7 a.m. Dan Callahan counted 4.45 inches for August and 31.43 inches for the year, surpassing 1971 by 2.19 inches, with past months shown against 1971 totals.
Commonwealth Edison customers reached 11.5 million kilowatts between 2 and 3 p.m. breaking the date record of 10.9 million kilowatts and surpassing this year’s high of 11.35 million. Over a third of output went to air conditioning and heat sensitive equipment with more heavy load forecast amid heat and humidity.
Preliminary plans call for reshaping a two story Grundy County Home to replace 24 single rooms with 12 double rooms to reach 147 beds when added to 75 existing beds. The plan aims to cut per unit costs and ease the 75 to 80 person waiting list amid a near fifty person public meeting at the courthouse.
A United Airlines Boeing 727 carrying an armed hijacker circling Vancouver International Airport demanded 2 million dollars in cash and 15 pounds of gold bars plus weapons. The hijacker, described as a white male in his 40s wearing a ski mask, boarded at Reno and forced crew to depart with passengers minimal. Authorities report previous Reno hijacking earlier in the year, with FBI tracking the case and recovery of ransom funds.
Communist rockets struck Da Nang and Chu Lai wounding 22 Americans and 72 Vietnamese and damaging 16 aircraft. One American airman died at Da Nang Air Base. Civilian casualties included 27 Vietnamese killed and 24 wounded near a village outside the base.
Tonight will be partly cloudy and warm with humidity and a chance of thunderstorms. Thursday saw temperatures from 68 to 90 at Dresden Island Locks and Dam while 7 am Friday read 70 and 11 am in Morris reported 87 degrees.
Henry Kissinger reached Tokyo after two days of talks with President Thieu in Saigon. He planned meetings with Prime Minister Tanaka and Foreign Minister Ohira to discuss the Honolulu summit and would then report to President Nixon at Camp David. The talks centered on Vietnam's general situation and Paris peace negotiations with no disclosed disagreements.
Grundy County Special Education Cooperative Executive Committee approved purchasing a $234.50 typewriter for the administrative office and a desk chair and bookcase for the mobile classroom at Morris Community High School. A funds transfer was made from the contingency to capital outlay. Mrs. Doris Heine reported ordering the equipment and said the bill will be presented next meeting. They discussed under-window movable storage units and planned the November governing board meeting.
Miss Lee O'Brien files in U S District Court alleging gender discrimination in a deputy sheriff hiring. She says she passed exams and was on the eligible list but was told the position has no provision for female patrolmen and seeks a court order directing Sheriff Wayne Shimp to hire her.
