West Wide Heat Eases but Stays Intense in California
Weather across the western half of the United States remained extreme with Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys hitting above 100 degrees. Forest fires expanded to over 9,000 acres near Cazadero as cooler air and fog slowed the spread, while Red Bluff briefly registered the nation’s hottest temperature at 105 as Needles led with 112. Temperatures across the Rockies and Plains stayed in the 80s, and heavy rain triggered flash flood watches in parts of North Carolina and Virginia with Harrisonburg, Virginia receiving about 4 inches in 90 minutes.
