Governor Daniel Walker announced an eighty four point five million dollar cut to Illinois school aid, citing failure to pass his tax speed‑up plan. The action reduces general aid, alters penalties, and delays broader formula changes until the plan is approved or July 1, 1977.
Washington Post survey of 449 of 2259 Republican delegates shows former Texas Governor John Connally as top VP prospect. Sen. Richard Schweiker ranks ninth with 2.6 percent as his first choice. Schweiker is noted as Ronald Reagan’s running mate pick.
Forecaster predicts variable cloudiness with scattered showers and storms tonight and Thursday. Tonight's low near 70, high Tuesday in the upper 80s to lower 90s. Dresden Island Locks and Dam reported Tuesday high 86 and low 59, Morris 7am 65 and 9:30am 73, ESDA notes Morris 86/57. Barometer 30.01 rising, humidity 86 percent, peak winds 12 mph.
A Chicago man, 53, was injured in a two car crash on U.S. 6 near Illinois 47 at 1 04 p m. He was treated at Morris Hospital. The other driver, Gregory Mathey 23 of Riverdale, was not hurt and faced charges for driving in the wrong lane and transporting alcohol. A second accident near Coal City left Mickey Peterson 25 injured when his motorcycle hit a deer on Dresden Road. Joi Orvis 19 was ticketed for no valid license after backing into a parked car on West Washington Street.
Joseph Gruber of Yorkville was elected president of the Kendall County Board of Health at the quarterly meeting. Other officers include Robert Gilmour of Oswego as vice president and Mrs. Nancy Larson of Newark as secretary. The board approved hiring Mary Reckinger as staff nurse and noted preschool clinics served 427 children with 277 in the lead testing program. Prenatal clinics start Sept. 28 and a medicare recertification visit is underway. Swine flu program planning continues under state health department guidance.
Gardner officials grant building permits for garages to Lee Province at 304 S. Jackson St. and James Nelson at 206 E. Wilmington St. May sales tax totaled 3930.58. Bob Casey bid 625 for 1963 truck. Water bills due by the 10th. cutoff on the 28th. no partial payments. State bike rules will be enforced. Lions Club to oversee project.
Six Morris Community High School Board members will review a special committee report on alleged unofficial conduct by Supt Harold Sutter during a 7 p.m. meeting in the annex. The session proceeds to executive session with a possible public release afterward.
Lana Phillips office will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for voter registration and transfers. The final day to register is Monday for the Sept. 14 primary election and Monday also marks the start of absentee voting. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. Call 942-0335 with questions.
Morris Grade School Board votes 4 to 1 to pay 3400 toward the crossing guard program, reversing prior reliance on city funds totaling 15623 last year. The panel also approves the 1976 77 budget, tax levy request, hires Marilyn Yuhas, and notes resignations and retirements amid district planning.
Donald Turner age 42 of 1028 Liberty Street was treated at Morris Hospital after a motorcycle crash on Lisbon Road at about 8 42 a m. He left the east side of the road and rode 183 feet into a ditch before the bike overturned. The green Suzuki was towed from the scene.
Pfaff Construction announces the Morris city landfill contract will end Saturday at noon. Mayor Donald Davidson had not yet received formal notice as of this morning.
The Regional Transportation Authority considers buying the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railroad commuter line to keep trains running from Chicago to Blue Island and Joliet, amid talk of abandoning it for bus service and possible court action.
Daniel Schorr said he will not testify about his sources to congressional investigators or about how he obtained the House Select Committee on Intelligence report printed by a New York newspaper. He warned he would not testify voluntarily and defers to lawyers and the courts if subpoenaed.
