Minooka High School Board meets and hires Elizabeth Loos as guidance counselor and Louise Kovel as social studies teacher. Milk bids from Weber Dairy at 6.75 cents per half pint and towel service at $5 per student per year are approved. A Social Problems class text, faculty event plans, and extra-curricular salaries are set. A change order from Peyla Electric for $473 and emergency lighting installation are authorized. Public hearing scheduled for Sept 23.
IBI chief Mitchell Ware resigns after criticism over campus drug raids and amid his pending role as special investigator in the Chicago Panther case. Gov Ogilvie noted his resignation while Brown offered no successor idea. Ware says conflict between roles led to departure and he may take leave without pay to avoid obligations.
Apollo 15 astronauts David Scott James Irwin and Alfred Worden return home toward a Pacific splashdown after an orbital Earth eclipse study. They will conduct a blindfolded hour long light experiment and hold a news conference from deep space detailing lunar rocks Hadley Rille Apennine Mountains and their 18 minute space walk.
Fair and cool tonight with lows in the low to mid 60s. Saturday should be fair and warmer with highs in the low to mid 80s. Thursday at Dresden Island Locks and Dam recorded a high of 77 and a low of 54 with 7 am Friday reading at 58 degrees.
State Sen. Robert W. Mitchler of Roswego paid a $10 fine plus $10 costs after pleading not guilty in circuit court to speeding to avoid an accident. Circuit Judge Robert W. Malmquist sentenced him after State's Attorney Richard Wilder urged a guilty finding. Mitchler, 50, and his attorney Robert Adcock of Morris appeared for the brief hearing. He was ticketed by Trooper Max Turner for slow driving in Grundy County near Illinois 47 north of U.S. 66 on June 3 when his car rear ended a vehicle driven by Sandra William, 20, of Gardner.
A tire on a house trailer blew out on Interstate 80 near Minooka Road at 8:50 a.m. injuring five people from a Crown Point family. Louis Melcher, 65, was hospitalized. Ronald Barbercheck, 34, his wife Darayn, 33, and their two sons were treated and released. The trailer and Barbercheck's auto were demolished and towed to a local station. responders brought the victims to Morris Hospital.
Albert the 10 foot alligator, famous for eating a poodle, must leave his golf course lake after a Collier County judge ordered eviction. The Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission plans to relocate Albert amid appeals and controversy from the Save Our Alligator Society.

The death toll from a Friday night crash on an Interstate 55 frontage road near Illinois 113 rose to two with the death of Lloyd T. Stoppel, 64, of Chicago, at St. Joseph Hospital. He and Rosalie Marshall, 54, of St. Louis, were struck while walking to view a minor incident. Marshall died Saturday.
Typhoon Olive weakened and moved north over the Sea of Japan after killing at least 78 people in western Japan and eastern Korea. It forced 23,770 Scouts to abandon the Mt Fuji World Jamboree campsite as officials ordered shelter in public buildings amid mud and heavy rain.
A neighborhood Carnival Against Dystrophy will host magician Danny Ford at 2 p.m. Saturday led by Terri Ann Lear with helpers Judy Lizenby and Tommy Wawczak. The event offers games such as ring toss milk bottle toss and basket shoot with hot coffee cold drinks cookies and popcorn to raise money for fighting dystrophy. Publicity notes BJ Jackson promotes carnivals on his TV program.
