Inmates at Vermont State Prison seized two guards and released all prisoners in a cell block after hours of negotiation. By early Tuesday an official reported inmates began returning to their cells as the incident was brought under control.
Five prisoners trigger a disturbance at a prison as 60 inmates refuse to return to cells. Guards are held hostage then freed. officials decline to disclose grievances or concessions. About 100 inmates are affected in a tense standoff as negotiations continue. Critical injuries reported for a 69 year old man in a separate Illinois crash. Weather notes record July precipitation and temperatures.
Grundy County Sheriff Marvin Olson oversaw burning of a small marijuana patch Monday at 6 p m on Kenneth Yard's property five miles west of old Illinois 47 on Southmor Road. The State Highway Department cut the weed before burning. The new law places owners responsible for noxious weeds with fines up to 100 dollars first offense and 200 dollars for subsequent offenses.
Eight potential candidates emerge as Sen. Thomas Eagleton withdraws from the ticket. Names include Sen. Frank Church, Sen. Edmund Muskie, Sargent Shriver, Gov. Reubin Askew, Ribicoff, Nelson, O'Brien, and a possible Carter option floated in Atlanta. McGovern plans to announce his preference within days.
ABC and CBS plan live coverage at 9 p.m. EDT of Senator George McGovern's statement on the Eagleton resignation. NBC considered delaying coverage until his message is known. McGovern says the decision to have Eagleton step aside was to avoid further party division and shift focus to the campaign and Nixon records.
Two witnesses in the Prince George’s County court identified Arthur H. Bremer as the man who shot Governor George C. Wallace at a May 15 campaign rally in Laurel Maryland. Bremer pleaded innocent by reason of insanity to 17 charges. A gun salesman testified Bremer’s signature appeared on a January gun purchase.
Four youths died when a cellblock fire trapped prisoners at Martin County Jail in Stuart. Sheriff Crowder said three victims appeared to start the blaze with magazines and mattresses, while the fourth was in an adjacent cell. One identified victim was Robert Lasset, 19 or 20, of Indiantown.
