Fire devastates North American Furniture plant in Coal City
A wind driven blaze at the North American Furniture Co on E Oak St Coal City caused about 1 million dollars in damage. Fire Chief Art Trotter said the roof over the offices blew off at 6 30 pm and the main factory area was engulfed by 11 15 pm with nine fire units including help from Braidwood Braceville and Morris. No injuries were reported and the cause was undetermined with the fire marshal to investigate.

Chicago winds injure three at International Amphitheatre
Severe gusts during the Disney on Parade show injured three people when concrete slabs crashed through the roof of the International Amphitheatre in Chicago. Two women and a 5 year old boy sustained minor injuries as 7 000 spectators watched. The rest of the program was canceled. Firemen and ushers guided exits while five to six slabs tore holes in the roof. Wind gusts reached 55 mph at Midway Airport with a 54 mph sustained wind for about 45 minutes.

Parents deny sale in custody case over 12 year old Rita Jackie
In Joliet Illinois a federal tax return showing Harold Miller gave 26000 dollars to Mr and Mrs F Michael Flynn for marrying their daughter was introduced in Circuit Court as evidence. Miller and the Flynns face charges of conspiring to participate in child abandonment for the alleged sale of Rita Jackie 12. Miller’s attorney says the return supports that Miller did not buy the girl and the Flynns did not sell her. The state seeks to remove the Flynn children from custody. they are in foster care pending the hearing.
