Weather slows jobs but not all in Morris area construction

The Morris Daily Herald reports that weather slows work on major projects yet union leaders say it is not the sole cause of a nationwide labor drought. The Joliet Local 150 estimates about 550 of 13 000 members are unemployed with May 31 contracts looming.

Town and Country Art Show Set for April 26 27

Judge Refuses Sealing Watergate Testimony

U S District Judge Charles Richey refused Sen. Sam Ervin’s bid to seal future deposition testimony by Watergate burglar James W. McCord Jr. The ruling upholds court independence and the public right to free speech and press. McCord’s civil case depositions will become public once transcripts are ready, likely within days. Parkinson denied sealing, calling McCord’s deposition open.

Brandt's party backs West German US alliance

The Social Democratic convention in Hannover overwhelmingly endorsed West Germany's alliance with the United States and full NATO participation. About 370 voting in favor with around 30 abstentions, amid a left-wing push but no policy change. Leftists remain a sizable minority of 110 delegates among 435.

Minooka Votes Clerk Contest in Village Election

In Minooka the sole contest is for village clerk with Anita K. Pifer and Gerald Knudson as candidates. Olive Brinckerhoff not seeking re-election. Incumbent Clyde Heap runs unopposed for village president. Trustees J Melvin Phillips Raymond Offerman and Lee Thompson seek re election unopposed. Polls open 6 am to 6 pm at Minooka Village Hall Mondamon Street.

Weather Update From Dresden Island to Morris

The forecast calls for sunny and warmer conditions with highs in the 50s today and 58 to 65 on Saturday. Tonight will be fair and not as cold with lows in the mid to upper 30s. Thursday reached 48 degrees at Dresden Island Locks and Dam with a 29 degree low. At 7 am today the temperature was 32 and by 11 am downtown Morris was 48.

Man arrested on sex charge in Grundy County

Lester Sellers, 35, of 211 Nettle Town Dr., was charged with two counts of taking indecent liberties with a 16 year old Morris girl. He appeared before Circuit Judge Robert Malmquist and was denied bond reduction. Bail set at 100000. remains in Grundy County Jail after court denial.

Morris Faces EPA Charge Over Unpermitted Dump

The City of Morris is charged by the Illinois EPA with operating a refuse disposal site without a permit from July 1, 1970, to Jan 9, 1973, and open dumping. A public hearing on PCB73-107 is set for 10 a.m. May 4 at the First National Bank of Morris. Morris Planning Commission to hold zone change hearing

A public hearing will be held Tuesday at 7 30 p m by the Morris Planning Commission at the First National Bank of Morris. The request would rezone a land strip 457.22 feet by 758.70 feet from Planned Unit Development to B-III on the west side of North Division Street. The Borens family owns the parcel, extending a B-III section rezoned for Century Wholesale.

Special Ed Co op hires aide and plans housing options

The Special Education Cooperative Board met at Franklin School and hired Kathleen Matteson as a full time teacher's aide for Intermediate LD to replace Brent McArdle who became a full time teacher. Doris Heine and Lenore Hodgson were granted travel permission for a May 10–11 conference at Mt Vernon.

Speck Returned to Joliet From Menard Prison

Richard Speck, convicted of eight nurse murders in Chicago in 1966, was moved from Menard State Prison to Stateville Penitentiary. He had been at Menard for tests after a Jan. 30 transfer and complained of homesickness while alleging threats from inmates. The 1967 death sentence was overturned by the Supreme Court due to jury composition issues.

Planes collide in California killing sixteen at golf course

Two four engine aircraft one NASA Convair 990 and a Navy P3 Orion collided in flight near Moffett Field and crashed onto a Sunnyvale golf course. Sixteen aboard died and one was critically injured among the jet’s crew while onlookers and golfers escaped unharmed.
