The thirty first Hiatt reunion gathered about 135 relatives at Centerville city park on Sunday September 7 with a long noon meal and a short business meeting electing Clyde A Hiatt president Loyd N Carter vice president Opal M Callen secretary Dorin Wailes treasurer The Harris reunion followed August 31 and September 1 at Alden Minnesota with ideal weather One birth and one marriage noted and many attendees listed from Iowa Minnesota and Alden with officers Maurice Burns president Geo Johnson vice president Dorothy Hendricks secretary Grace Staulen treasurer and numerous families present
A church gathering bid farewell to Horace Schaffner his wife and daughter Dorothy Jean as they depart for Cincinnati Ohio where Horace will enter Bible Seminary. A large group attended with homemade ice cream cake and iced tea served and social time shared with many neighbors and friends listed.
A large group of Moravians attended the Old Settlers reunion at Unionville last week. Among those listed are Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Bivin, Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Pennington, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Morrison, Mr. and Mrs. Merv. Lawrence Ruled, Mr. and Mrs. U. S. Mangle, Jeff Patrick, and others. The notice also mentions an invitational event and attraction at a local printing shop offering advertised table prices.
The Women's Society of Christian Service met at 7:30 Tuesday evening at Mrs. Kenneth Condra's home to discuss We Press On In A Fellowship World Wide. Lesson leader Mrs. Rabuck led I Have A Steward ship Entrusted To Me and attendees included Mrs. A C Main, Mrs. Ted Campbell, and others planning programs for October 1.
A pink and blue shower honored Mrs Virginia McDonough at Mrs Earlene Davis home on Friday night September 6. Co hostesses and guests shared games and gifts then refreshments. Attendants included Ruth Hart Laura Goedney Nellie Du Vall and Centerville residents among others. several send best wishes but could not attend.
The Church of the Nazarene Youth's Fellowship welcomed their new pastor Rev. F. A. Hahn and Mrs. Hahn with a Friday evening event at the parsonage. Hosts Mrs. Bill Wood ward and Mrs. Frank Woodward organized a memory program with refreshments afterward. Attendees included Henry and Mrs. Horn, John Fisher and Carl, Frank Woodward and family, Fay Paxton and kids, Alva Graham, M. H. Johnson and families, Bill Woodward and sons, and Helen Garretson.
The Old Soldiers and Old Settlers reunion drew a large crowd. E. V. Stewart, Spanish American War veteran, was the oldest soldier and J. C. Cross the oldest settler, both honored with chairs. Harvey Hiatt of Cambridge joined D. L. Hiatt for a weekend visit and they attended the Centerville park gathering. G. Harper from Appanoose won first in woodchopping at Ames with a 44 second time. Out-of-town attendees included several residents from Ottumwa and Moulton, with Emmett Hopkins returning from a Nevada visit with the Edgar James family.
Otterbein Guild of the Evangelical United Brethren church met Monday evening at Joan Callen's home with sixteen members present. Miss Callen led the lesson as all members participated. Plans were made to send a clothing box to Europe, and Phyllis Rabuk and Joan Callen volunteered to help pack it Tuesday afternoon. Refreshments were served to close the session.
A comely African American widow two weeks post wedding receives 506 in new bills from a claim agent after her husband is killed by a switch engine in the Alabama railroad yard. She pockets the money, contemplates remarriage to a railroad man, and jokes about life and her new fortune.
Sunday gathering honors late Thomas and Josephine Wolfe with a cooperative dinner at Albia park. Attendees include Elmer Bankson and spouse from Denver, Louis Jobusch of Johnston, Walter Sonnenburg and Kathy Jo of Des Moines, Henry Sonnenberg of Granger, Earl Swift family, Emmett Derby family, Merle Dicks family, Roy Sheldon family, Donald and Laura Dicks, Beryl Brown with Kenneth, Larry Phelps, George Hammond and family, Esther Murphy, LeRoy Brown, L G Beaty and Dale, Ned Argo and Laura Jo of Ottumwa.
Mrs Emmett Derby hosts a list of social visits in Albia and surrounding area. Families including Derby, Calhoun, Turner, Miller, Gililand, Sheldon, Swift, Callen and others attend gatherings at homes and park events with updates on a newborn Patricia Ann to Herbert and Mrs Gililand and a Minnesota fishing trip. Local social notes mention telephone meeting attendance and visits through the week.
The Callen reunion occurred Sunday at Moravia park with 67 attendees. After noon meals a brief meeting elected Zell Callen as president Vera Scott as secretary and Wendell Coulson as treasurer. Numerous Callen family members and associates attended from Ottumwa York Nebraska Waterloo Oskaloosa and surrounding areas.
