Plans for the Appanoore County Contour Plowing Contest next Tuesday September 9 are progressing. The site is on Ernest Talbert’s farm one mile north of Plano. Contour demonstrations begin at 10 a m with judging of furrows adherence to contour furrow uniformity and tilage quality and waterways.
Mr and Mrs William Burns left for a two week visit then plan Delhi California home relocation. Mrs Amy Lockman moved in as new owner. Harold Burton moved into the Lockman property along with L O Carpenter into the adjacent apartment. Howard DeMotts and Richard Harp property occupants shifted in. Louis Schaffner Jr moved to the west of the Christian church property bought from Horace.
Mr and Mrs Carl Pfannebecker have purchased the Leo Hoffman property in northwest town now occupied by the Clifford Stockers. The Stockers have bought the Jake Morris property and will take possession about November 1. The Morrises plan to move to Washington state.
Following Antiquity Lodge No. 252, A F P A M, a Third Degree of Masonry was conferred on Donald Brain. His uncle Earl Brain of Hedrick helped in the ceremony. Ralph Jones, publisher of the Hedrick Journal, and visitors Max McCoy of Blakesburg and others from Albia attended.
The Taylor Aids announce a Texular monthly meeting on September 10, 1947, with Elizabeth Turner chairing. Everyone is welcome to attend.
The Pheax Mangas Booster Club will meet next Monday evening at the East End Cafe for a supper at 6. Kari M. LeCompte of Congdon will be a guest.
Carl Richard Hiatt son of Mr and Mrs Fred Hiatt lands at Camp Stoner California after 13 months abroad in Korea He expects a 27 day furlough then discharge after 18 months of service He is homeward bound for a short leave and plans to return soon for duty completion.
Ronald Lee Woodward two and a half year old son of Mr and Mrs Ronald Woodward of near Moravia ranked very high in the baby health contest at the Iowa state fair this year. He scored 97,839 out of 100000 but was slightly below the winning boy due to scratches on his legs and arms.
Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Cullen of three miles south of town marked their 61st anniversary on Friday August 29. They have lived on the same farm since marriage and raised four daughters Mintia Shoemaker of Oskaloosa, Lillian, Elsie, and Sylvia. The three daughters living at home help operate the farm.
Mrs Louise Oehler hosted a picnic supper Wednesday evening for her sister and family visiting from Oklahoma. Guests included Mr and Mrs Kenneth Barghahn and children Linda Diane and Bruce of Knoxville and Mr John Barghahn of Elkader Ia. The Oehler family and visiting relatives joined callers later enroute to Des Moines for the fair. The Grewell family planned a visit to Clinton Mo on the way home.
Mr and Mrs Jim McAninch of Iconium report a two week vacation covering the rodeo in Sidney Nebraska travel through Kansas to Colorado and Denver to Frank Pence home Wyoming and Yellowstone Park then through the Black Hills to Iowa state fair in Des Moines the trip deemed fine by the travelers.
The Second Annual Blue Cross Kick-off and banquet moves to Tuesday night at 1 15 p m at the Continental Hotel with a Swiss steak dinner for volunteer workers during enrollment campaign September 8 to 20 expanded to include employees outside Centerville under 65. Contacts listed for Moravia Chariton Union townships explain the plan. A reunion at G C Tisue home Aug 31 had all their children and families present after a long separation since 1944 with several in attendance and Karen Easter visiting home before returning with her parents.
Mr and Mrs John Laws announce the engagement of their daughter Phyllis Laws to Paul Dicks son of Mr and Mrs Truxton Dicks. Both graduates of Moravia high school class of 47 Phyllis works as private secretary to Superintendent Irving J Hickman while Paul assists his father in farming No date set for wedding.
Announcement from Novinger Mo marks the upcoming marriage of Miss Norma Thompson to Orville Lair former Moravia teacher who has been chosen to serve as superintendent of schools at Burtland Mo for the 1947 48 term the ceremony set for Sunday September 7.
Duane Veach writes from Halifax Nova Scotia where he serves as chaplain's assistant aboard the U S S Rochester a heavy cruiser on a refresher cruise with the Naval Reserve He also plays organ at Sunday services and recalls mock air attacks used to train gunners The crew is slated for three days liberty before returning to the United States.
The second race of the season is set for Sunday at Centerville Fairgrounds. Time trials begin at 1 00 PM and the main events at 2 00 PM. On Monday evening September 1 Mr and Mrs Harry Woodward and Mr and Mrs Ray McCloud hosted the Sew and So Club at the McCloud home. Egg and postal card relays were played with prizes for barnyard chorus and hog calling. Ray McCloud received an ear of his own 1947 coin. Mrs John Van Zante won the grand bingo prize. Ice cream strawberries and cookies were served.
A pink and blue shower honoring Mrs Helen Tadlock was given at Mrs Berl Arnolds home on Thursday afternoon August 26. Hostesses Mrs Olive Doud and others served cake fruit salad and koolade after games and prizes were awarded to Mrs Edith Dodd Mrs Grace Moore Mrs Ardis Walter Mrs Marjorie Scott and the honoree.

Mr and Mrs Bob Cayler and Mr and Mrs Max Martin visited Town City Tuesday to see Jimmie Cayler who is ill in the children s hospital there. They report his condition better.
A park union service begins at 8:00 PM withInvocation by Clarence Schaffner. Wesley Church provides a hymn by request as the crowd joins in three group songs with the United Brethren orchestra and Mrs. Coffin at the piano. Vocal duets by Mrs. Witherby and Mrs. Hickman precede three additional group songs and a sermon by Rev Rabuck. The program ends with the song America and Benediction by Rev Davis.
Grace Methodist Church Moravia Iowa led by Pastor John C Davis offers Sunday School at 10 and 11 oclock and a 11 oclock preaching service with M Y F at 6. Wesley Chapel holds a 945 am preaching service at 1046 am Sunday School. Church of the Nazarene under F A Hahn lists Sunday School at 9, worship at 12 and 7 30 pm with 3 pm prayer and Bible study Thursday. Church of Christ led by Clarence A Schaffner conducts Sunday School at 10, worship at 11, and 8 pm park services all urged to attend.
Earl Kabuck Pestor leads Sunday School at 10:00 a.m. with Donald Jones as superintendent. Worship follows at 10:50 a.m. Youth Fellowship at 6:30 p.m. Service in the park at 8:00 p.m. Prayer Meeting 8:00 p.m. Wednesday. Bring clothing for overseas relief to the church basement by Friday afternoon. Everyone is welcome at the church.
The Assembly of God hosts a tent revival in Iconium with nightly sessions at eight o'clock featuring special music and old time gospel messages. Evangelists F. G. Cline and wife extend a personal invitation to attend.
The Sew and So Club held its inaugural reunion on Sunday August 31 at the Mora via park moved to the United Brethren church basement due to rain. A noon cooperative dinner accompanied a cake by Lloyd Phillis of Albia marking the 15th year. Mrs. Frank Wilson led the afternoon program and history was recounted by charter member Mrs. John Vendante. The group planned a next reunion and closed with the club song.
Alva Grahan celebrated his birthday at the home of his son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Warren DuVall. His only living brother Dora Grahen of Avery joined and spent the day with his daughter Mrs Lay Geley in Garden Grove California. He visited his sisters Miss Bryan Hart of Centerville Miss Blanche Grehau of Des Moines and Mrs DuVali last week.
Moravia Public School opened September 2 with a full faculty and record enrollment. Elementary has 126 pupils and High School 158, with detailed class counts and lists of teachers led by Superintendent J J Hickman. New hires Miss Addelena Sampson and Floyd Wadill join the staff, bringing strong credentials from Iowa and Missouri.
Gardner leaves Tuesday morning for Hook Rapids Minnesota to enjoy a fishing excursion as a representative of Vinton Hybrid Seed Corn Co. About eighty company representatives will join. Mrs. Gardner visits Ottumwa relatives during the trip. After the fall festival they plan an extended western visit.
Moravia's largest annual event the Fall Festival Farmers Institute and Poultry Show runs Thursday Sept 11 through Saturday Sept 18 with school band concerts, parades, races, a tobacco and poultry show, contests and a state fiddlers contest. Premium lists and entries due by 1:30 p m Friday.
Mrs. J. C. Davis attended funeral services in Pasadena for her brother LeRoy Varney age 80 who died August 28 at his niece’s home in Muscatine. Born December 1 1866 in West Branch he lived in California for 60 years. He was a retired carpenter and a Friends church member. Surviving are four brothers and three sisters. Burial was in Pasadena cemetery.
Attendees from the locality including Mr and Mrs 0 G Davis and W S Norton gathered for the funeral Tuesday afternoon at the Orleans church northeast of Moulton. Mrs Norton, born Gale Taylor in Moravia, longtime resident and wife of Perry Norton, was noted in connection with relatives and neighbors.
