It claims his administration avoided dramatic missteps, cites personal spending on a Rapidan Resort, and notes Hoover did not push controversial policies. TO SERVE Ladies of the Methodist church will serve dinner and supper on both Friday and Saturday during the Fall Festival. Charge for adults will be 35 cents, for children 20 cents.

Fall Festival week promises community effort to surpass previous records. Johnson County Fall Festival Chair G. B. Johnson urges everybody to cooperate and contribute, aiming to prove the event is more than a quilt show. Karl Hurliman joins in urging unity.
Wendell Willkie declines a Moravia stop and states his Iowa route does not pass through the city. He thanks G B Johnson for the invitation and expresses he would enjoy visiting Moravia if possible.
Report says over 60 farmers and their wives fully support the Moravia Fall Festival with financial backing. The piece commends the community for backing the educational event, quilt show, and related activities, urging continued collective effort from residents, the school staff, and local clubs.
The WMA of the United Brethren church will hold its regular monthly meeting at Mrs. EB F Oehler on Tuesday with Mrs Zell Callen and Mrs John Dille assisting hostesses. Mrs Oehler will lead the lesson on Horicons and a Stewardship Ceremonial will close the meeting followed by an 8 oclock hour.
The U B Aid served a Wednesday menu featuring smothered chicken with gravy mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes alongside sauerkraut sliced tomatoes carrot and pineapple salad plus pig coffee and iced tea.
Town American Medley arranged by W. Harris with selections including Bohemian Girl and The Old Oaken Bucket. The band rehearsals continue with new maneuvers and fundamentals as junior members are invited to drills and contest prep next month. Richard Hurliman studies baritone. two more players needed. second hand instruments available. Doris Rouse owns a new cornet.
The second annual Monroe county plowing match is planned for the Turner farm three miles north of Moravia with dates Sept 7 or Sept 14. Sponsored by Rural Young People of the county, the event will be postponed if weather prevents, and the winner advances to the state meet near Boone on Sept 21.
Mrs. Dayton Dotson and Mrs. Wilbur Johnson co hosted a pink and blue baby shower at the Day home on Friday evening with progressive rock, high score won by Miss Margaret Ward, and guests including Mrs. Lee Hiatt Misa Leila Day and others. Refreshments featured banana split wafers and coffee as nut cup baby bootie table decorations greeted guests and gifts were sent by several absent friends.
A Townsend plan meeting will be held at 8 o clock Thursday evening in the Community building. Mrs. Catherine Collina of Des Moines will be the speaker.
The Band Auxiliary will hold its regular meeting at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon in the music room. Edna Johnson, Secy.
The Women's Organization for Christian Service formed by uniting Ladies Aid, Foreign Missionary, and Home Missionary societies met at the Methodist church auditorium at 2 pm Tuesday. Forty-two women enrolled. membership remains open until Oct 15. Officers include Mrs C M McFatridge president and Mrs D K Orelup vice president with others handling secretary and program roles. Regular meetings set for the fourth Wednesday each month. installation planned Sept 25.
The United Brethren Sunday School elected officers for the coming year led by Carl Van Zante as superintendent. Harold Mason and Lyle Jones named in key roles with several assistants and department heads. The new officers begin duties September 22 at the start of the conference year.
Mrs C A Turner suffered a broken right forearm and other injuries Saturday evening after turning her ankle and falling in front of Gardner Hatchery. She twisted her left ankle while trying to rise, resulting in a fracture above the wrist, a swollen ankle, and bruises. Additional tidbits note Moravia’s Old Setlers reunion and Ottumwa visitors returning from Missouri.
Several improvements have been made on local business places during the past few days. Painting of the front of the N. R. Ward Grocery store was completed last week. The Johnson Barber Shop has been repainted inside and out and now presents a brighter aspect. W. W. Tracy has supervised construction of a workshop and coal shed at the rear of the telephone office. The work is not yet completed.
Frank Swaim announced his nephew Basil Swaim of Drakenville will assist in the store this week after severing ties with the Maca Yeast Co. Basil, 28, unmarried, is expected to arrive once duties there are complete.
The annual Foster reunion gathered at Centerville city park on Sunday September 1 with 126 attending the noon meal and many relatives arriving in the afternoon. Milo Foster was elected president Charley Foster vice president Deloria Foster treasurer and Ruth Broshar secretary There were numerous attendees listed including Kermit Kincade L M VanDorin Nash Easter Foster Kaster and many others noting two births and no deaths since last year.
Newly elected officers of Basil Cowell Post No 361 American Legion will be installed Monday evening September in the Legion Home. L Palmer commander.
The Hiatt family held their annual reunion in Centerville park on Sunday September 1 with about 120 relatives and friends attending. The oldest attendees were Martha Hiatt 95 and Lyde Hiatt 91. Officers elected were Loyd Carter president J T Hiatt vice president Juanita Dooley secretary and Ellen Hiatt treasurer. Mrs Loraine Lindsey of Omaha treated the group to ice cream before departure. The reunion will return next year on the first Sunday in September, weather permitting.
The 18th annual Coffin reunion was held at the Charles Coffin home in Moravia on Sunday Sept 1 with 33 relatives present. A cooperative dinner was served at one o clock and the afternoon was spent visiting. Attendees included A M Pennington and daughter Kathryn Des Moines. several Centerville residents. Dale vicinity pair Jim Allem. Udell residents Carl Coffin and Paul Coffin. Moulton residents Paul Coffin Jr Shirley. and others including RK R Pennington and Charles Coffin with son Cell.
The Espy reunion gathered at Centerville park on Sunday with attendees including Wm. Espy T. S. James Mrs. Anna Kanter and many others listed. Family members and relatives from multiple households attended, sharing a community event in Centerville.
The 17th annual Callen reunion gathered about 80 people at the Moravia Community hall on Sunday August 25 despite poor weather. After a noon dinner a program featured songs recitations and dialogues by Callen family members and friends with a brief family history presented by C S Callen. continued on page 4.
Enrollment at Moravia High for 1940 41 nears 200 with 186 Monday and 2 3 more possible, driven by 155 country students and 48 town pupils. Grade and high school total 325, up from 279 last year. Some rural boys may need housing to attend.
The Fall Festival program omits the old fiddlers contest and notes it will be held Thursday evening September 12. Contestants should contact George Johnson by Wednesday evening September 11 to enter or confirm participation.
Church notices outline a Sunday School at 10 a m with M K Blackman as superintendent. Worship follows at 11 a m, Christian Endeavor at 7 p m, evening service at 8 p m at the M EL church. All day Aid event is Wednesday Sept 11 with a noon dinner. Cordial invitation to all.
The Brown reunion will be held at the Community Building in Moravia on Sunday, Sept. 8. Members are asked to bring items for the potluck and share updates with relatives.
