Colors of Birds Brighten Our View of Feathers and Flight
National Geographic notes that bird colors arise from pigments and feather structure. Blue comes from light-reflecting layers, while reds and yellows are pigment-based. greens result from pigment overlaid by blue-producing structures. Seasonal changes expose colors as edges shed, and many species show year round reds or fading gray edges in winter. The piece discusses migratory ranges, nesting behavior, and origins from Central and South America, with North American distribution.
