Gene and Mary Ellen Lathen vow to be more cautious after a recent Friday the 13th marked by a troubling day for the couple.
A high voltage transmission line fault fatally electrocuted five cows at a farm after an insulator broke and the line fell across a fence. The Lathens called their son Mike for help. en route, his pickup was wrecked by a separate trailer incident, causing about $2,000 damage.
Mrs Earl Swit notes social visits in Franklin with families such as Earl and Roscoe Argos and the Hiner, Pickrell, Wilson, and Eastlick households. Sundays and Fridays feature gatherings at multiple homes including the Derbys and the Wilsons, with mutual friend exchanges and family time.
The Union promotes an appreciative Christmas gesture with a free gift card and a version to place on the Christmas tree, encouraging thoughtful expressions of the season.
Local residents from Elk River to Ottumwa attended family gatherings, birthdays, dinners, and church events. Visitors included Harold Vickrey and Nadine Domrer, with frequent travel to Purvis, Deep River, Centerville, Ottumwa, and Newton for meals, birthdays, and community functions.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Mitchell hosted a birthday dinner Sunday for their son Brian’s fourth birthday with grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Lemley in attendance. Weekend visitors at Emmons Atwell’s included Mr. and Mrs. Gail Hamilton and others from Aurora. Saturday supper guests were Duane Rhoades and Jesse from Corydon. Charles Cross welcomed guests Wednesday evening, including Kenneth Bates of Albia and Harry Wray.
