Appanoose County completed election counting at the county seat earlier this year amid a strong voter turnout. The county again aligned with Republican preferences, diverging only to pick up H. G. as a notable exception in the results.
Voters backed Hargis for Treasurer praising his proven work. The piece notes a drift in the old-line Republican base and stresses the need for a two party system to safeguard democratic progress. A minor wager loss to Postmaster Pettibone is mentioned in relation to other outcomes.
The Appanoose County Tuberculosis and Health Association held its annual workshop at the Methodist church in Centerville. Forty seven hundred Christmas Seals were prepared for the November mailing. A county wide testing plan for four school grades is proposed for next spring, with all families to receive seals in the second week of November.
Mrs Phillips and Mrs LaVern Smith Moravia seal chairmen thank Moravia high school typing class for addressing over two hundred envelopes for the town of Moravia. The project supports post office mail return at eight cents per letter. contributors may destroy seals if not participating.
Moravia boys receive leadership awards while local families visit relatives and attend church. Alva Fowler travels to Centerville then University Hospital for a checkup with doctors reporting his condition much better. Weekend visits include Glasgows in Diagonal, Powells and Marlyn in Centerville, and numerous calls at Dotson, Streepy, Burgers, Whislers, and Hiatt homes.
More than 100 attended a bridal shower Saturday night for Janet Harrington and Bob Harsh at the E A B church. Hostesses included Lois Wilson Aleasa Hiatt Lucile Carter Lucile West Fern Hudgens Margaret Van Zante Vic Mihalovich Ann Brede Leta Pettibone Winifred Schrodt Frances Burton. Guests helped open gifts with Betty Jordan Polly Harsh Nellie Argo Martha Rouse Judy Van Dorin. The couple plans to wed November 18 at the Unionville Iowa Methodist church.
Jack Long reports the Iowa Children's Home Society drive netted $6170 and expresses gratitude to all who helped in the effort. The successful fundraising event reflects community support for the children's home.
Mrs H B Spring Udell and Rev B D Hinegardner were in Des Moines on business Friday. Harold Slay of Louilla visited the Lionel Spring home Saturday evening. Dewey Houser and hosts celebrated Mrs Selix's birthday Sunday dinner. Linda Burger spent Sunday with Harold Spring. Callers included several Spring family members and friends. Jeffrey Stark’s birthday honored at a gathering. Carl Whisler and others attended funeral services for Mrs Clem York of Bloomfield, mother of Mrs Pittman of Bloomfield.
Mr and Mrs Ray Chapman of Seattle visited from Thursday morning until Saturday at the Earl Swift home. Mr and Mrs Elmer Kellogg and others spent Wednesday at James Calhouns and Hattie Miller at Charles Hersbergers. Leon Calhoun stayed with Tommy Kellogg. Linda Ammons with her grandmother Mrs Fred Ammons. Coy Swift and Larry Derby families visited Earl Swifts Thursday and Emmett Derby's on Thursday.
Marlys Fenton reports Midland area social happenings in Union Township. Multiple calls and dinners occur with the Card Calhoun Carrie Boyer Herschel Kelly and Fenton households. Attendees include Dommer McGee Tubaugh Ward Hendrix Downing and others. Weekend visits include Des Moines trip with Margaret Fenton and FHA convention in Leon Iowa.
