Moravia CROP Walk Receipts Near 800

Moravia and Unionville participants ranging from teens to 70s joined the CROP Walk from Moravia to the dedication site on October 19. Walkers escorts sponsors and drivers contributed, with many in the community offering water sandwiches and encouragement as funds for Church World Service reach beyond $800.

20th Century Club Meets With Mary Meadows

The 20th Century Reading Club met Tuesday afternoon with Mrs. Mary Meadows. There were 12 members present and a roll call of words to live by today. A program included "Pee canines of A Liverpool Lad" by Phil McDanel, "Day of Deluge" by Cecil Tadlock, and "The Saved Our Lives" by Wilma, with a poem by Sylvia Hiatt. The next meeting will be hosted by Helen Tadlock with a coop dinner on December 8.

Early Moravia Roots: Stores Hotels and Post Office

A history of Moravia notes the first store opened in 1851 by Solo mon Long at the current Moravia Furniture site. The initial hotel by Mr. Croft stood where Jake Schriener's home was, now removed for a mobile home of Robert Hiatts. Edward Reich served as first postmaster when a post office was established in 1851. A farm building later became Mrs. Forrest Main’s home. Joseph Sumner once rode weekly to Unionville to fetch the mail, as a stage coach carried mail between Ottumwa and Centerville twice weekly.

Good Turn-out In Election Tuesday

A quiet city election Tuesday produced re‑election for the incumbent council and mayor in Moravia with 93 ballots cast. Bill Burkland led Moravia council votes with 93, while Dave Harris and Paul Wilson received 91 and 89 respectively. Keith Chelsing won the mayoral race with 82 votes and eight write‑ins appeared for seven mayoral contenders. Unionville voters produced a blank ballot but 40 votes re‑elected Richard Hopkins as mayor and floor members Richard Exline Tim Moore Robert Hopkins John Romans and Jane Batterson. Mystic saw a heated race with 296 votes. James Krum was re‑elected mayor and council seats went to Michel Cunningham John Malette Lynn Ryan David Thompson and Gerald Vinton.
