Funeral Services Friday for Moravia Businessman Frank Swaim

Moravia mourns the sudden death of longtime merchant Frank Swaim 79 at Monroe County Hospital Albia after heart attack. A Moravia resident since 1912 he ran a general store and later a funeral home. Survived by wife Pearl three sons Ellis Claude Hall, two brothers, four sisters and extended family. Funeral Friday February 7 at 2:00 pm at EUB Church Moravia with Rev. F A Richardson presiding. Burial Moravia Cemetery with Masonic rites.

Christmas Seal Workshop in Centerville Hosts TB Group

Mrs Zell Callen and Mrs Carl Tisue attended the annual Christmas Seal workshop at the Eagles Lodge in Centerville. The event began at 9 AM with a full board meeting and luncheon. Miss Dorothy Hibbs of Numa, president of the Tuberculosis and Health Association, led the board meeting. Letters enclosing Christmas Seals were to be mailed by Wednesday.

Moravia and Lovilia Split in Tuesday Basketball Action

Moravia boys defeated Lovilia 69-41 as Vincent 21 and Underwood 14 led the winners with Dooley 10. Lovilia’s Gullion 32 and Avon 16 paced the guests while Jesse Van Dorin topped Moravia with 25. Girls fell 43-59. No game Friday due to a state teachers convention. Moravia next plays Udell Tuesday.

Charley Harrison VanDorin born July 29 1874 in Henry county Iowa died October 30 1958 at Golden Age Nursing Home Centerville age 84 3 1. Married March 18 1898 to Sarah Elizabeth Foster they had five children and lived in Moravia Iowa. Survived by wife two sons Arthur Harold and daughter Mrs Cecil Matherly, one sister Mrs Jennie Elmore, sixteen grandchildren seventeen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Funeral Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Moravia Christian church with Donald Plum Albia in charge burial Moravia cemetery.

The Twentieth Century Reading club met with Mrs. Cody Luse. Roll call featured old time remedies. Members voted to buy a new library book in memory of Mrs. Dora Hartinger. The program on Whats new in medicine was presented by Mrs. Melissa Fenton and Mrs. Nellie Williams.

During Education Week Moravia Community School invites all parents and students to visit on Wednesday November 12. Buildings open 6:45 to 8:00 p.m. then gym program at 8:15 featuring reading and teaching discussions, panels, safety talk, and refreshments.

World Community Day Observed At Evangelical United Brethren Church

World Community Day will be observed at a union meeting at the Evangelical United Brethren church Friday, Nov. 7 at 7 30 p.m. The theme Exchange Goods Ideas People. Gifts of money and material aid will aid sharing with Women of the South Sea Islands and in Pakistan to support Christian work. Bring new yardage goods yarn and pieces of material to help refugee mothers sew and knit while waiting to settle. Program features readings music exhibits from foreign countries and dedicated gifts. Public urged to attend.

Memorial Service for Wm Keith Kelsey in Hampton IA

Memorial service for Wm Keith Kelsey son of Mr and Mrs R Pearl Kelsey of Hampton was held at the Methodist church in Hampton. He died in a Mississippi River boating accident in Minneapolis October 19 with bodies of other victims recovered soon after. Survivor Claudia Peter of St Paul Minnesota. Keith born June 6 1935 near Moravia Iowa, lived in Centerville Nevada and Audubon before Hampton move eleven years ago. He graduated Hampton High 1953 and Iowa State 1957 with Air Force commission. He worked for Remington Rand Univac St Paul. Surviving parents, sister Patricia Waterloo brother David Fort Bliss El Paso and grandmother Mrs F A Thompson Moravia. He was uncle to J E McAninch and Wayne Thompson relations noted. The Kelseys express thanks for support.

Moravia area residents can attend a three Friday training series November 7, 14 and 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Albia American Legion home to form a Brownie troop for girls ages 7 to 17. The plan includes divisions for Brownies 2nd to 4th grade, intermediate 5th to 8th grade, and seniors in high school, within the Caravan Trails Girl Scout Council covering Appanoose Monroe and Wapello counties.

John Lindskoog Dies After Illness in Des Moines

John Lindskoog 45, former Moravia Udell area farmer, died Saturday night at Veterans hospital Des Moines after a nine month cancer illness. He led Appanoose County National Farmers Organization as local president and campaigned for Fourth District Congress. he also led Ottumwa Milk Producers association and served as safety director of the state drivers license department. Survived by wife and daughter Vickie Ann of West Des Moines, step-daughter Sandra Anderson, stepson Gary Michael Anderson, parents Milton and Mrs Lindskoog of Odebolt, two sisters and a brother. Funeral at Hamilton Des Moines with Rest Haven burial.

Upsets Across Monroe County Election Favor Democrats

Monroe County voting leaned Democratic with notable exceptions. State ticket results showed Loveless 2266 and Murray 1913 in key races, McManus 2084 over Mooty 1958 for Lt Governor, Johnson 1940 over Lynhurst 1905 for Secretary of State, Weddle 1960 over Akers 1959 for State Auditor, and Republican John Kyl 1929 narrowly ahead of Carter 1915 for Congress. Bagley won the sheriff race 2543 to Mundy 1565. McCarty was re elected for 1959 term 2142 to Davis 1851, while Scott defeated Reed for 1960 term 2033 to 1960 1960. Mrs Falvey, Democrat, beat Raymond Winecup 2018 to 1950 for State Representative.

Moravia voter Frank Chambers near 89 to vote after 68 years

Moravia resident Frank Chambers, first voting in 1888, casts his ballot in the general election here. He has voted in Moravia all but one election since 1890 and will be 89 on November 17 as his daughter hosts an open house at Blakesburg Methodist church. Local returns show party shifts with several incumbents defeated and Kyl carrying Moravia over Carter.

Iconium Methodist To Have Co-op Supper

The Iconium Methodist church will host a family night Friday November 14 with a cooperative supper at 7:00 and Ray- charity will show his pictures at 3:00. Public invited. Nazarene Group Holds Fellowship Party

A fellowship was held Thursday evening at the Nazarene parsonage with Rev and Mrs LaVerne Smith hosting. Frank Woodward and Rev Smith led a hayride out to the country then returned for devotions games and music. Doughnuts pie fruit salad and coffee were served. the home was decorated for Halloween.
