A humorous jumble argues over prohibition repeal rhetoric with barbed jokes about drys and Al Smith, notes odd incidents like a chair thrown on a front lawn and a goat atop a federal building, and ends with a quip about Will Rogers and long campaign broadcasts.
The Chariton Township Farm Bureau held an evening meeting at the Teonium Methodist church with 176 attendees. The program included readings and talks by Florine Perry Hugh Guernsey Mrs Newcomer Moulton Roscoe Wales and debates on presidential candidates. Norman Thomas won the arrow vote for merit over Hoover and Roosevelt.
Honey in Moravia is advertised for an upcoming sale on Saturday at noon. Neighbors are urged to bring containers for purchase. The notice names J. M. Cate as organizer and contact.
The menu lists noon and evening options with chicken beet dressing gravy mashed potatoes turnips coleslaw sweet potatoes bread butter jelly coffee. Local serving plan includes close attention to mealtime on election day.
After 42 years in the Moravia millinery trade, Mrs. Frank Selby sold her stock to Mr. and Mrs. C Earl McDonough of Lacey Iowa and plans retirement with her daughters in California. The McDonoughs, known locally as Mrs Cecile Creech, will expand stock to include more lines.
Mrs W F Boardman Alice Summer daughter of Stephen and Clarentine Summer was born October 24 1868 in Davis county Iowa and died October 28 1932 in Ottumwa after moving to Monroe county at age 12. She taught in public school and joined the Christian church in 1901. She married Willian F Boardman April 16 1890 and had two sons Mauries E and Earl F. Survived by husband two sons four grandchildren two sisters and eight nephews. Funeral at First Baptist Centerville conducted by Rev Luther W Childs with burial at Ealinger cemetery.
The Boardman family thanks friends for kindness and sympathy during illness, death, and burial. Gratitude extended for flowers and support from Ida Anderson, Irvin and families, and others.
Mrs Grant Lincox displayed a cherry twig in the Union window last week. Brought to this office the twig bore several fruit cherries and sam a blossoms, noted as an unusual sight for the time of year.
Mystic resident Frank Delay known as Skinem Delay and a longtime insurance agent in Mystic for 36 years died at his home Sunday afternoon after a long illness. He also engaged in real estate. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Mystic Main Street church with Rev. Bainbridge officiating.
Moravia Moravia Methodist church Class No 9 plans a combined Harvest and Rally Day in Sunday School hour and after service a pot luck dinner in the church basement, with Mr and Mrs J J Chambers as program chairmen.
The Co-Operative Marketing Association sent six railroad cars of livestock to the St. Louis market Monday and Tuesday. Two loads of sheep departed Monday and Tuesday saw one sheep shipment two hogs and one cattle car. Manager F. P. Hawk and Claude Hawk accompanied the Tuesday shipment.
Vera M. Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Orval Smith, wed Alvin Johnson on June 4, 1942, in Brookings South Dakota. The couple, longtime Moravia Iowa natives now in Brookings, begins a new life together as Orrval and Peter Johnson praise the union.
Mount Ayr Record-News notes preserved farm records of W H Main and F M Main showing 1895 corn at 14 to 15 cents a bushel and 1896 at 16 to 17 cents. An 1897 stock and grain invoice lists horses 10, cows 55, calves 15, hogs 2 1 2, chickens 2 4 a dozen, corn 18¢, oats 10¢, butter and eggs totals, with fat hogs later selling at 19 76.
Appanoose County treasurer W. B. Haught announced a delay in advertising delinquent tax sale to December 12 with sale set for January 2 1938. Attorney General John Pletcher approved the extension giving 30 more days for residents to raise funds. County Attorney H S Greenleaf joined treasurer in Des Moines to seek approval. Sale postponed to January 2 1938 will help owners who cannot pay in time retain property rights.
The O E S invites members to a regular meeting next Tuesday evening with practice following the chapter and a covered dish luncheon.
Vera Smith hosted a Tuesday evening gathering at her home with a delicious lunch. Three new members were initiated and the next meeting will be at A N Christopherson home on Oct 4. Frances Smith and Peter Johnson with families visited Orval Smith's home for dinner. Alvin Johnson and Vera Smith announced their marriage in Brookings in June.
Pay up notice seeks settlement from debtors with 30 days before turnover to collector J. W. Halden. Mrs. Frank Selby notes the Simmers family expects a four-person Thanksgiving visit from Mrs Simmer’s sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Strickland and Billy of St Paul, Minnesota. The sisters last met in Chicago six years ago before Iowa from Chicago for the 1923 wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Simmers.
Henry Field spoke to a full Moravia school gymnasium Saturday following a stop in Moulton at 9:30 and before attending Corning’s homecoming with Governor Turner. The Moravia school band performed a 46 minute program that pleased the sizeable audience.
Lementine Tucker brought a large dish of fine strawberries to the Union publishers this morning. The berries are of the overbearing variety and a third crop for the year, a peak for November.
A Republican rally at the school building Friday evening opened with County Attorney Greenleaf delivering a capable address due to a date mix up preventing speaker W A Hunt of Ottumwa from appearing. County Chairman E L Simmons G L Bovard and other county candidates spoke while Harris orchestra of Mystic provided music and Mrs J F Albert closed with a Huaver song.
Farm Bureau women begin second year Home Management with Miss Fannie Gannon as specialist. First training was Oct 8 at Mrs Chas Coffin’s home, topic Housecleaning up-to-date. Mrs Watts led Oct 12 follow up with 12 Indies. three districts represented. Maple Grove district followup Oct 20 with ten ladies. Demonstrations used time and labor saving devices. Showers district meeting not yet held. Coulson district met Oct 19 at Mrs Riley Callen’s. only one other lady attended, with plans for larger turnout.

In a weekend mischief, pranksters hauled M r Johnsons goat to the top of the local post office. The goat was found Tuesday morning and, as far as known, did not damage the building. Local authorities note no political link to the incident.
Thieves struck the Will Powell farm south of Moravia on a Friday night taking 26 White Wyandotte pullets. Mr Powell and family were away at a school program and found the robbery when they returned about 10 30. Sheriff Wales investigated noting it was the first such theft in the vicinity for some time.
Young Republicans of Appanoose county announce a large torchlight parade in Centerville Thursday evening. John L. Dillon, Centerville chairman, leads the committee arranging details for the event and promises a memorable oldtime procession.
Alexander Jackson Argo a long time resident of Appanoose and Monroe counties Iowa known as Jack Argo died October 2 1932 at his son Roscoe Argo s home in Monroe county He was born November 20 1853 in Pickaway Ohio to William and Sarah Argo He moved with his parents to Appanoose Iowa in 1866 and lived all his life among those counties He married Martha Haver April 3 1879 She died about two years earlier He is survived by eight children four sisters and by many friends He was a faithful Christian and beloved by those who knew him Funeral services were held October 27 at the Iconium M E B church with Rev J W Zerbe officiating Burial followed in Iconium cemetery
Allen G. Mason formerly with Albin Blazer Company will move with his family to Mystic this week to assume the role of bakery manager. He previously operated a bakery in Moravia Monroe County.
Our Sunday School is growing as 8 young married people are organized into a new class. All are welcome to attend the Sunday morning and evening preaching next Sunday, with Pastor BE at 6:30 pm. Bible Study will be held Thursday at the McCrory home.

The United Brethren Church lists revival meetings at the Karso building with morning and evening services. Sunday School Rally Day is November 13 and the District Rally of the 7th district on November 16 with special speakers including Pastor G. H. Suenkel. Ladies Aid meets next Tuesday and Womens Missionary Association gathers November 1 evening.
Appanoose County church notices show Sunday School at 10 a.m. and morning worship at 9 or 11 a.m. with Rev. William Bainbridge and Harold Spain leading youth activities, Epworth League events, and community nights at Iconium Fairview and related parishs. Readers are invited to join these services and gatherings.
