Corn Hog Program Advances in Iowa Counties
Farm Adjustment News Digest reports Iowa counties are ready to start the corn hog program once instructions and application blanks arrive. Secretary Wallace says a few weeks are needed to print forms and contracts, with extension workers soon holding statewide meetings to organize county efforts and mobilize farmers for temporary county groups ahead of a permanent corn hog association. The plan combines a $200 million payment for reducing 1934 pig production by 25 percent, a $150 million payment for cutting 1934 corn acreage by at least 20 percent, and removal of hogs from normal trade channels for relief administration use. Hogs processed for home consumption stay exempt from taxes. Tenants facing absentee landlord issues can seek help from county agents. Polk County becomes second in Iowa to submit signed wheat contracts, with 168 contracts filed and 33 more pending signatures. Farm debt conciliation commissions may be formed by farmers, creditors, and business leaders to handle renegotiations and loans through land banks. Data show Iowa farm families lost $1.95 billion in purchasing power from 1921–1933 if prices had remained at 1910–14 levels, a drop of $8,095 per farm.
