Three Corn Pests Threaten Iowa Crops
Iowa State College entomologist Dr. Carl Drake reports three corn pests in parts of Iowa. A farmer near Algona lost a 40 acre field to corn bill bug, which also harmed crops near Leon and Bloomfield. Seed corn maggot damaged kernels before germination in many counties, aided by cool spring. Sod webworm larvae feed on young seedlings when bluegrass pasture is plowed for corn. Replanting guidance urges straddling rows and timed plowing to avoid infested zones.
