Local Moravia community weighs whether to hold the July 4th celebration as a small turnout at Tuesday’s meeting leaves plans uncertain. Business leaders’ financial support appears limited while residents urge participation to keep the event alive amid mixed enthusiasm.
Moravia will celebrate July 4 as the community’s event while Superintendent Wm H Young announces Moravia schools accredited by the North Central Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges for the coming year. The district remains a member since 1927 and meets high standards required by the Midwest accrediting body. Only three area high schools in Appanoose and Monroe counties are accredited Moravia Centerville and Albia.
Selby, son of John Selby of Moravia, has become sales manager for a St Petersburg firm in Florida. He previously worked as budget manager in Charlotte, and recently moved with his wife and family to establish a home in the area. The company on Second Avenue South announced the appointment.
The school board selected two new teachers to fill vacancies during the upcoming term. Misa Jacobs will also oversee the library, and Miss Sherard will take on a normal assignment as part of the hiring changes.

The Moravia school board accepted the resignation of Clifford Boyer who sought release from his contract to become high school principal and teacher of science and mathematics at Urbana Iowa. Boyer a Unionville High School and Iowa Wesleyan graduate served two years teaching physics geometry esthetics and social studies and was slated to coach boys athletics next year. board has not contracted with a replacement.
Elizabeth Sneed daughter of Mr and Mrs J B Sneed of Moravia completes primary course at Simpson. The notice notes her family background and marks in the program as part of the local society item.
The Kinser household, led by Zell Wilson, organized neighbors to plow, dishe, harrow, and plant nine five acre fields of corn. Seven acres and seven teams participated. a man managed to help without aid. Local residents express thanks to Zell Wilson.
Heat continues with a cooldown pattern into Tuesday night and Wednesday. Crops are reported to be doing well amid the warmth and unsettled conditions.
The revival campaign at United Brethren Church ends Monday with a public fellowship meeting led by Evangelist Robinson Will featuring object lessons on patriotism and a Sunday illustrated sermon titled Two Plaga Bible pictures shown at 7 45 pm Services held daily except Saturday
Moravia high school band invited to perform on a fair day at the Ions State Fair. Director Betterly offers free summer instruction for band beginners and advanced players. The band will receive two one hour concerts and free admission tickets. baritones trombones and cornets are needed.

The Progressive club held its final business meeting of the year at Mrs Grace Veachs home. Officers elected include President Margaret Beery Vice President Margaret Brain Secretary Alice Betterly and Treasurer Bertha Brozhar. Bridge honors went to Margaret Brain Marjorie Fracy and Pearl Black.
Moravia to Celebrate July 4 with July 3 evening event. Bert Turner elected president of the 1936 celebration with L H Beery as vice president and M K Blackman secretary. Von Tracy named treasurer. Committees named include Finance Advertising Entertainment Arrangements Parade and more. A second meeting was held Tuesday with insufficient attendance and another meeting planned to discuss important matters.
Miss Doria Schneider daughter of Mr and Mrs Elmer Schneider Moravia Ventura wed Dale Schreiner son of Mr and Mrs J H Schreiner Moravia in St Johns by The Campus Episcopal church Ames. Service by Dr Leroy Burrows followed by Lohengrin chorus. Bride wore dusty pink. groom gray tweed. They honeymooned north then to Ottumwa after July first. Schneider a Goodell graduate with home economics degree from Iowa State, taught in Moravia High School. Schreiner a Moravia High School graduate and Iowa State College electrical engineering alumnus, active in music and Sunday school. Attendees included J H Schreiner of Moravia Frederick Schneider Sidney Kenneth Schreiner Waterloo Edna Bowers Ames faculty Fred Blumenstock Moravia, Walden Smith Mediapolia.
Memorial Day services were held at Moravia cemetery at 11 a.m. Basil Cowell Post of the American Legion led the program with Auxiliary and Moravia school band support. Rev. Chas L. Ellis delivered the address as veterans were honored with wreaths, a firing salute, and taps.
The kittenball season officially opens Thursday evening with two Moravia city league games. A meeting Sunday drew names for four city league teams, listing managers and many players. The full game schedule has not been released for publication yet.
Dr and Mrs C T Slavin attended University of Iowa commencement in Iowa City. Their son Noorden Slavin joined the graduating class and earned the Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. He will begin an orthodontia internship there for 1986 87 and later receive a Master of Orthodontic Science.
A wedding of interest to residents of Moravia and vicinity occurred at Clear Lake. Evelyn Higley, daughter of J. A. Higley of Ventura Iowa, married Boyd Harding. Mrs Harding has many friends in the area who extend congratulations.
Superintendent Win Young reports WPA state educational director's approval allowing Moravia nursery school to continue operations through June with further plans pending a later date.
Taylor township voters cast 299 ballots in the June Primary 215 Republican 84 Democrat. C M McFatridge nominated by Democrats for state representative leading T W Killion by about 200 votes. six other county offices nominated at the primary. Republican candidates W E Blatt D R Wilson for sheriff and James Cline for 1937 board member term remain in contention as no one hit 35 percent. United States Senator and other state offices listed with party contenders. fifth district race in flux Baldridge Burdock contested. Thurston easy winner for representative in the fifth district. Guernsey nominated for state treasurer. Official Taylor township Appanoose County vote. unofficial results noted.
B S Staley 64 longtime Centerville contractor died Tuesday night at 8 20 at St Joseph hospital from May 25 after his car collided with a car driven by Morris Lowenburg of Albia. Staley suffered a fractured skull, his wife three fractured ribs. He served on the school board and city council. He is survived by his wife and six children.
