Little Telegrapher Joins Army Acknowledging Hard Life
This week’s This and That This column honors Charles W. Powell a small telegraph operator who loved his job and hoped for promotion. Rejected by Army due to fitness he underwent an operation and was inducted, arriving in Moravia and vowing to meet friends and learn military life. Powell weighed 107 pounds at swearing in, the minimum being 105. He’s viewed as a capable future telegraphist and soldier. The piece also recalls a Scout camping trip with a rough night, making the best of a late start and a hard, cold vigil with ham burger meals and a long night ahead.
