Auto Fatality on Unionville Road in Fairfield area
Robert C. Cross aged 37 of Fairfield died in a car crash on Unionville Road near the Lester Strunk home four miles southeast of Moravia. The 1:45 a.m. Saturday wreck left Cross dead on arrival at Centerville hospital and injured his daughter Susan 16 and Ronald Anderson 22 of Keota. Driver Donnie Hargrave 22 of Maulton and a fourth passenger survived after being ejected from the car. James Stufflebeam notified authorities. Cross formerly worked for the Philco plant in Fairfield and is survived by his wife and three other children. his first wife, a native of Japan, was killed in a similar accident in 1962.

The first Arbor Day observance at the high school will plant two Sugar Maple trees on the grounds Monday May 10 at 11 40. Raymond Ashby retired Friday from the Iowa Southern Utilities railroad after 46 years. His brother Harley also retired after 45 years of service. Raymond began at 18, helped form the Southern Iowa Railroad, served at Centerville and Moravia, and stayed on the section most of his career. New owners Clyde Forbes and Clyde Forbes Jr plan track upgrades and Rathbun lake development with future excursions. Both men received gifts and an ISU service pin.
