Jess Pollard 83 a lifelong resident of the area died Friday afternoon at St Joseph hospital Centerville after a prolonged illness. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 PM in Turner Funeral Home with Rev R L Brown officiating and burial in Moravia Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Mildred and sister Sadie MelIntire with several out of town relatives attending.
Rural eighth graders in nine Appanoose county towns will take exams May 2 and 3 per county superintendent L. Eb Johnson. Moravia and Unionville high schools are among the sites. Thursday morning covers spelling and arithmetic. Thursday afternoon, reading and grammar. Friday morning, history and civics. Friday afternoon, geography, hygiene and music. Seventh graders test Friday afternoon in geography physiology and music. music exemption possible for those who learned choir songs with the phonograph.
Milwaukee crews install new flasher and bell signals at the Wa bash avenue crossing of the Milwaukee railroad this week. Foreman R D Baker leads eight workers starting Monday after last week’s concrete foundations, with completion due late this week or early next. The crossing, long seen as dangerous, now gains automated signals to warn approaching trains.
Funeral services were held Tuesday for Charles Petefish 74 at the Udell Christian Church. He died Saturday at Mercy Hospital in Oskaloosa. The body lay in state at Turner Funeral Home in Udell before services. He was born November 5, 1873. Survived by wife Tra Petefish one son Earl Petefish of Cedar Rapids five daughters Hazel Gordon Centerville Bertha Farwell Kansas Lucille Mathews Udell Louise Petefish at home Mary Gordon Udell and eleven grandchildren. Rev Orlando Ogden officiated at the funeral and graveside services in Fairview Cemetery east of Udell.
Advance sales suggest strong turnout for the Mother and Daughter banquet Friday at the Methodist church. The meal will be served by the men and boys of the church. mothers and daughters are urged to make reservations in advance.
Funeral rites were held Wednesday at Albin Methodist church for Jesse H. Derby a 48 year old World War II veteran who died Sunday April 21 at Des Moines veterans hospital Burial was in Oak View cemetery.
Seven Taylor township delegates were named at the Democratic caucus in the Moravia community building. W. G. Firkins G. L. Golleher D. Minnes P. K. Horney Mrs. Rowena McFatridge Mrs. Mettie Minnes and C. M. Mc Patridge were selected. Firkins named township committeeman and Mrs. Minnes committeewoman. Justices of the peace nominees were P. K. Horney and W. G. Firkins. Dr. D. K. Orelup re-elected township committeeman. Grace Veach chose again as township committeewoman. Republican caucus in Taylor named J. L. Dodd Theo Miller H. E. Glick and others as officers and delegates to the county convention.

Friends and family gathered at the Vesa Hiatt home in Oskaloosa to fete Mrs. C. A. Hiatt on her 95th birthday born April 26, 1845. A pioneer of the area, she arrived in Iowa in 1852 with the Burton family enduring a three month prairie trek from Randolph County North Carolina. The event recalled her long life from a nation under eleven presidents to Iowa’s growth. She is mother to 11 with seven living. attendees included Frank C Hiatt Lute Hiatt J P Day and others from Moravia Centerville Jerome and Oskaloosa. Powell could not attend.
C F Social Odd Fellows and Rebekahs with families and guests hold a joint social at the hall next Tuesday evening. Doughnuts and coffee will be served.
Betty Bishop daughter of Mr and Mrs David Bishop of Moravia and a Parsons College junior is named president of the Parsons YW G A for the coming year by a YW meeting this week. She succeeds Ruth Creighton of Mediapolis and will join the cast of the Conservatory of Music production Martha staged May 1 and 2 with Ensemble Technique class supervision by Professor Dawson in the new high school auditorium.
Moravia high school musicians scored two firsts and seven division II ratings at the state Class B contest in Fairfield. The woodwind chamber quintet and Rosemary Main earned division I and II ratings, with Grace Argo topping the local group as a division II horn soloist. Freshmen led the quintet with Codyne Luse a bassoon yearling, and four other freshmen among the quintet. Several second place and non placement results followed, highlighting a strong Moravia showing.
Soloist Victor and the clarinet quartet lead a list of Moravia entries eligible for the national music contest in St Paul, but Superintendent Wm H Young doubts local participation due to high travel costs and a depleted music fund. Wilbur Harris notes contestants from other cities would compete on even terms, while the Moravia high band awaits decision on joining the May 11 Pella Tulip Time marching band festival.
Frank Hoffman 79 died Tuesday in a Wheatland Wyoming hospital after living in Moravia, where his son Lee and grandson Frank Scott resided. He is survived by sons Lee of Slater Wyoming and Robert of southwest of Moravia. daughter Grace Scott died three years ago. Burial at Moravia with services at Turner Funeral Home Saturday at 2 p.m.
Jimmy Albert son of Mr and Mrs J F Albert of Kansas City Missouri formerly Moravia has been nominated to the Mask and Wig club at Paeso high school Kansas City where he is a freshman. The club includes students excelling in drama and Jimmy is one of ten chosen from twenty eight candidates.
Mrs. Von Tracy hosted Progressive Guest Day on Thursday afternoon with a bridge party for club members and guests. A 4 o clock luncheon followed, jacquins and favors on tables, high scores awarded to Mrs. George Firkins and Mr Theo Miller, with many attendees listed including Mrs. Roy Oughton and Mrs. Kenneth Schreiner.
Five members of Moravia Chapter C B 3 attended a Centerville gathering Tuesday evening to honor the grand officers. J P Coffin remains quite ill at his Wabash avenue home.
