Fly control tips for Iowa cattle herds and barnyard cleanup

Iowa farmers can cut milk losses from flies by destroying breeding places and using fly traps near barns. Start cleaning manure every 2 to 3 days as spring nears, or pile manure in straight-sided heaps with a surrounding ditch to prevent fly emergence. Borax can help prevent breeding when sprinkled on fresh manure.

Harold Gunderson Iowa State College

Fly control tips for farm manure and barns

Gunderson emphasizes balanced manure use for fertilizer while warning against excess. Outdoor toilets need borax and chlorine, daily lime if fly control works, and scattered or burned rotting materiel. Deeply bury grass clippings and compost to stop fly breeding. Use simple fly poisons and preventive measures like cattle sprays, barn cleanliness, and screens.
