Rain hampers censor work but aids road conditions as the rural mail carrier writes this afternoon. Farmers price fruit amid thawing ice and growing weather in March. A Bert Adams hen lays an egg with a rabbit image, and Merle Walter shows 18 inch bluegrass at the Union office.
The Moravia Boy Scout Troop held a Saturday paper drive collecting over 7300 pounds stored in the Community Building. Scoutmaster Troy Adams thanked the community and scouts. another drive is planned this month to reach 22,000 pounds for Troop 40 to win the General Eisenhower award amid continued local paper saving.
Scout attendance at the last Troop 40 gathering included Max Hammond Hoyt McKern Jackie Coltrain Roy Closter Skipp Brosshar Scoutmaster Troy Adams and Chairman Wm Scareliff. Regular Friday meetings resume weekly with Gary Tharp returning from a visit with grandparents in Albin to Camp LaJune North Carolina.
H Burton describes the Iwo Jima assault from a ship off shore. He praises Marines, recounts bombardment, air assaults, and a near night torpedo attack. He notes Star shells lighting the sky, the Japs dug in, and the island's capture as a crucial air base. He thanks Navy and Marine units for low casualties and declares pride in the crew.
At a library meeting the town committee drafted plans to plant canna bulbs, sell surplus bulbs for funds to buy a special variety, and designate club captains to care for four park beds. Mrs. E. G. Hawk presided, with reps from town clubs and rural leaders named for planting duties.
Emma Lathrop Hough daughter of Hiram and Mahala Hough was born on a farm in Monroe county southeast of Albia Iowa on March 10 1859. She taught rural schools then at Kirkaville Missouri and for ten years as a successful educator. She married J. H. Lathrop in 1886 and had Maude Harris of Beaumont California and Grover Lathrop of Detroit Michigan. She joined Cumberland Presbyterian church in Moravia and remained a faithful member until death. Funeral services were held March 28 at Moravia United Brethren Church conducted by Rev. G. M. Talbott with burial in Moravia cemetery.
The Progressive club was entertained at the home of Mrs. Garnet McDonough with Mr and Mrs Lester Brain and Mr and Mrs John Veach as co hosts High score prizes went to Mr and Mrs Chester Broshar Numerous guests attended including Mr and Mrs Roy Fisher and daughter of Blakesburg with Mr and Mrs John Dike and others Mrs Burdette Ward and family were guests east of town Also present were Mr and Mrs Glen Fowler and daughter Lois of New Sharon with her mother Mrs Birdie Main and family Members of the Gardner and Mullenix families joined Easter dinner with Otis Mullenix and Natine James Maxine and Wesley Cox of Ottumwa Afternoon waiters were Mr and Mrs John Fontinel and son Bobby and Mrs G Pontinel of Albia.
A full church heard Rey and Mrs L D Lockwood missionaries from Buenos Aires speak about their work and experiences. District president Mrs F A Hahn led a short talk on district efforts. Rev Remis Rehfeldt supervised the service with a large delegation from four district churches including Rev A ds Doke Bussey Rev C D Gadbow Chariton Rev Ira Parker Sevilla Rev Alvin Farrier Mason and Rev Arthur Payne Albia. The couple has spent six years in Argentina and are resting in Marton Indiana.
Mayor D. E. Bishop announced Moravia will observe Clean-Up Day on Tuesday April 10 at a regular town council meeting. The plan mirrors prior years with transportation for hauling rubbish, urging residents to place small articles in accessible containers for pickup. Containers of value will be left for future use.
Mrs. John Wood learns her husband Pvt John Wood is injured in Germany when an ambulance he was in to hospital collided with another vehicle. He has pneumonia and bruises but no serious injuries. he is hospitalized in Belgium. He served with the 78th Division, 1st Army, since February. Three more names added to the They Have Served and Have Been Honorably Discharged list of World War II veterans Howard H Derby Raymond Plants and Lloyd Blumer were discharged recently Cpl Keith Sawvel on furlough from Boca Raton Fla visited his parents Mr and Mrs Lester Sawvel He returned after a 15 day break The Rural club notes a radar course egg roast with 36 present 109 eggs eaten prizes to Carl VanZante and Hattie McCloud and the club traces 14 years of activity since 1981 with about 30 families involved Mrs E E Condra visited Seymour area after three weeks with son Kenneth Condra
Pvt Rolin Dille sent to Camp Maxey Texas for training per word to his parents Mr and Mrs John Dille. Several service members send Easter greetings and arrange mail with families in Iowa and California as furloughs and reassignment are noted.

The Church of Christ in Wn led by Pastor J Hastie lists Bible School at 10 00 p m with Winnie DuVall as superintendent, Communion Service at 10 80 a m, and Sunday evening Christian Endeavor at 6 30 p m with an invitation to all.
Harold Burton writes that the chaplain speaks topside and prays over the announcing system to keep the crew informed. He notes uncertainty about the voyage’s next destination but promises a safe return home to Lungs Point and loved ones, with continued prayers for safety. The message is officially approved by the Commanding Officer of the U. S. S. Lunga Point.
The E. I. C. club met Thursday afternoon with Mrs. Fred Hammond hosting. Mrs. Harold Hudgens led entertainment and Mrs. Lee Hiatt won games. Frances Copeland of Des Moines visited over the weekend with Mrs. E. F. Oehler.
Iowa's 7th War Loan will set a record with a $185 million individual quota plus $82 million Series E. The drive runs April 9 to July 6 with payroll savings and a May 14 general launch. quotas exceed 6th War Loan by 40 to 60 percent, stressing home and workplace campaigns.
Scout broadcast scheduled for 7:80 o clock Tuesday evening April 10 over KBIZ Ottumwa. Moravia Boy Scouts and Scouters will be heard in a transcription program sponsored by the Southern Iowa Area Scout organization, the last in the series. Participants recorded in Ottumwa two weeks ago.
A family dinner was held at the home of Mrs. Flora Jones on Sunday. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Dorin Wailea and Elahvonne of Centerville, Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Sincox and Mrs. Grant Sincox of Albia, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Free and Dale and Elaine, and Mrs. Edna Net.
A large crowd attended the Easter cantata Messiah presented by the Community Choir at the Methodist church led by Miss Anne W Seeley school music supervisor. The report notes various local visits and family events including births and veterans, plus changes in employment and community roles in nearby towns.
Moravia high school students enter a large roster of soloists ensembles and the concert band for the state preliminary music contest at Centerville this Thursday and Friday. A pre contest concert at the school drew a large crowd praising the band soloists and ensembles.
Those in the third grade who helped Jerry Coltrain celebrate his ninth birthday on March 28 were Mitzi Sawyer Carol Bro shar Joyce Martin Paul Wilson Charles Searcliff John Rick Bill Bishop Gibby Garrett Paul Wood ward and Lonnie McDanel. Roberta Coltrain and Earlene Whicker served supper. The party featured a colored egg hunt with each child’s name on an egg. Absentees included Wanda Jordan Wendell Condra Jack McDanel and Jerry Sharp.
Daniel Brackett born in Bell County Kentucky July 15 1853 died at his home March 24 1945 aged 91 years 8 months 9 days. Survived by widow Elizabeth Lock Dee and nine children Mollie Howell Mystic Iowa Minnie Connett Ottumwa Iowa Dellia McCrory Burlington Iowa Lulu Moses Des Moines Iowa Ellen Gay Albia Iowa Gabe Johnson Moravia Iowa Everett Des Moines Roy and George Brackett Galesburg Ia. Two sons preceded him in death. 48 grandchildren 45 great grandchildren. Baptized August 15 1914 joined United Brethren church. Funeral Wednesday March 28 at 2 p m Christian church Rev Ronald McLy officiating. Burial Oak View cemetery. Mrs Nora Scott visiting Unionville.
