Iowa House defeats county assessor bill in tax reform fight
Des Moines, Iowa. March 23. The house voted 65 to 41 against the county assessor bill after a long debate. The defeat casts doubt on the income tax measure due to come up in the senate this week. Amendments to make the assessor appointive and to remove certain officials were defeated. The vote surprised observers and indicates strong pressure from Farm Bureau and Gov. Turner. Debate also covered an expense account bill. The senate has postponed that bill. The article also discusses congressional redistricting struggles and plans, noting Democrat strategies and Republican counterplans, with the senate resisting long-range redistricting and a proposed court-directed solution.
