Mrs J T VanDorin, the Union correspondent from Enon, writes of a house fire that destroyed the home but left items salvageable. The yellow correspondence envelope shows water damage and smoke stains, yet personal items and Union materials were recovered on site.
The column recalls Mrs. VanDorin’s fire experience and Mrs. Hiatt’s long-standing Moravia Union subscription dating back nearly 60 years. It notes Frank Hiatt’s claim as the paper’s oldest continuous subscriber and mentions Mr Tucker’s earlier Hiattsville correspondence. It also covers the Goldfield girls basketball tournament in Des Moines, highlighting record crowds and the venue’s spacious, unobstructed floor for viewing.

The Frank Hiatt home hosted a Sunday afternoon gathering. Mr and Mrs John Wood spent Sunday afternoon with Dorothy and Genevie Donovan. Mr and Mrs Newt Long and Jean visited Elbert Perry. Mrs Anna Hiatt attended W S C S with Elsie and Lillie Callen Thursday. Mr and Mrs Bill Long visited George Turner Wednesday evening.
The Brushy Ladies Aid met March 1 with hostess Ethel Lemley. Binding and quilting were done on Lu cille Atwell’s quilt. afternoon devotions led by Fay Fenton featured Second Thessalonians and a solo by Bessie Teater. Prizes were won by June Robertson, Jessie Elam, Lois Martin, and Bessie Teater as the next meeting set for March 15.
April 1 social roundup lists visits and moves around Centerville Udell and Unionville. Families including Spring, Powell, Moore, Buzzard, Salladay, Morlan, Eimer Elschlager and others are described hosting or visiting relatives and neighbors. Moves include the Eagle family returning to a farm west of Udell and a Cosatt family leasing property from Pulaski. Several plans to relocate to Salt Lake City and employment changes are noted.
Neighbors helped Mr and Mrs Lester Veak and Mary move to a new home near Agency last week and the Jans Wilsons moved into Veaks former residence. Circle gathered with Mrs Thelma McDanel and guests Mrs Johnson and Ruth.
A cooperative supper at the California schoolhouse on Monday evening March 7 drew 33 patrons, friends, and teacher Lula H Tillmont. Illness kept some families away. After a 6:30 meal, attendees visited and planned a basket dinner for year end. Names listed include Bert McKern Gene Tisue McCauley Easter Cochran Seals Gladfelder Tillmont and others.
