Otha Taylor Dies after Lingering Illness at 79

Otha Taylor son of J J and Mahala Boyd Taylor died at his Moravia home March 5 at 6 55 pm after a lingering illness. He was 79 years 2 months 25 days old. He married Grace Elizabeth Hays April 20 1916 in Oquawka Illinois. Surviving are five children Dayne and Buell Moravia Mary Taft Anoka Helen Johnson Moravia 1 brother 4 sisters 2 grandchildren and his wife had one son Harold predeceased him January 23 1953. He farmed in Moravia most of his life retired in 1948 and moved to Moravia. He attended BE U B church in Moravia. Funeral Thursday March 7 at 2 pm Turner Funeral Home Rev Lynn King officiating burial Hillcrest Cemetery.

Moravia Lobs In Sectional Tournament Loss at Albia

Moravia boys lost to Centerville 55 to 39 in a sectional game at Albia on Thursday February 28. Pfannebecker led Moravia with 17 points, Lindley added 9, while Centerville’s Scurlock scored 18 and Crowell 16. The first half narrowed to 22-20 at the break as Moravia pressed in a big gym.

Ben Allem 31 Dies at Centerville

Benjamin Richard Wilem aged 87 died Saturday afternoon March 2 at St. Joseph hospital Centerville. Born February 20 1870 in Appanoose County he was son of John and Phoebe Cook Allem. He farmed near Itonium from 1893 retiring in 1950 then moved to 630 North Tenth Centerville. Garden Club Plans for April Plant Sale

The Moravia Garden Club met February 27 at Louemma Palmer’s home with Grace Veach as co host. Minutes from January were approved. Plans for an April 27 plant sale were discussed. Mamie Tisue spoke on starting seeds and new flowers. Mabel Smith shared National Gardener articles. Aleafa Hiatt reported on nurseries and seed men. Eleanor Miller reported on a trip to the Home and Flower show in Des Moines. Refreshments followed.

Mr and Mrs Claude Hawk observed eight or nine deer crossing the pavement south of the Wabash underpass near the Hilton church. The animals hopped fences and moved on without alarm, all does with no horns.

Moravia Girls Head to State Tournament This Week

Moravia girls basketball team heads to the state tournament with four quarter final games scheduled Thursday afternoon and evening. Maynard, led by Mel Kupferischmid, faces Lavern in the first Thursday game as Blakesburg makes its second consecutive state appearance. Local fans plan to attend, while Donnellaon is eliminated by Luvern in the opening round.

House Warming at J. T. Van Dorin’s Moravia Home

A Monday evening house warming at Mr. and Mrs. D. T. Van Dorin’s Moravia residence drew members of the Twentieth Century class of the Evangelical United Brethren church. Guests watched TV, socialized, and closed with a devotional led by teacher M. K. Blackman. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Van Dorin and Mrs. Ulmont Main.

Henry McGhghy Returns Home After Hospital Stay

Henry McGhghy, a surgery patient at University Hospital in Iowa City for four weeks, was brought home Sunday. Mrs. McGhghy accompanied him, and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Long with daughter and Donna McGhghy traveled to Iowa City to be with them.

Band Motiters Club Meets At Schoolhouse Friday

Moravia Band Mothers club met at the schoolhouse on Friday afternoon with Mrs Harold Mason presiding. Mr Fenton spoke and a decision on serving the WHA banquet was made. Iowa Appanoose county farmers face a March 8 deadline to sign or amend corn and spring wheat acreage reserve agreements with ASC Centerville. A last minute rush is anticipated as 514 corn agreements cover 6783.4 acres for potential payments totaling 252180.40, with 1289.5 more acres requested and 44964.80 extra funds possible.

Christmas Seal Sale Totals Over Two Thousand Dollars

Appanoose County Christmas Seal sales totaled 2809.71 led by Roxa Miller as sale chairman. Townships Moravia Taylor Chariton contributed 195.25 with Union Udell Udell Unionville and others adding funds. 2655 tuberculin tests and 248 x rays were done with no active cases. Follow up tests scheduled March 20 at Moravia High School.

Moravia Regular School Election Set For Monday

Regular school election will be held Monday at the Community building. Two directors will be elected for a three year term. Incumbents Dan Mihalovich and M H Johnson face Harold Burton and Maurice Walter. If the district is reformed a second election may be held across the new district to fill four rural seats and possibly one from Moravia, replacing the current Moravia school board.

Watershed school plans day on soils and watersheds

A series of soil and water conservation sessions opens Thursday at the Agriculture Building with a 10:00 a.m. talk by Charles Ballantyne on watershed formation and conservation. An afternoon caravan will tour the Honeycreek watershed in Lucas County, meeting at Vogel Smith farm at 1:00 p.m. and departing to the Lucas County project at 2:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

Potts Completes Chemical Corps Training At Fort McClellan

Pvt. Richard C. Potts 23 son of Mr and Mrs K C Potts Route 2 Moravia recently graduated from the Chemical Corps school at Fort McClellan Alabama. He finished the nine week enlisted entry course training in chemical decontamination smoke generation and equipment repair. Potts entered the Army last September and did basic training at Fort Carson Colorado. A 1955 Iowa State Teachers College Cedar Falls graduate and former Royal High School English teacher, he now serves with the Boys In Service.
