Use Your Oats for Forage Not Grain

Iowa State agronomist Ralph Krenzin says using oats as forage instead of grain can boost profits if grain yields look doubtful. Early removal reduces competition for grass and legume seedings, with oats providing 4 to 5 weeks of grazing and supporting two to three cattle per acre. Livestock should enter when oats are 8 to 10 inches tall and soil is firm and dry.
