The county auditor offers copies of the Rey Rambilin financial report book for public review. The 1949 General fund shows shortfalls with most departments overspending except Sheriff, Coroner, bounties, district court, and a few others. printing alone rises from 6,961 in 1947 to 11,640 in 1949.
County records show official board proceedings cost 3301 in 1949 down from 4489 in 1848, and notices dropped from 1046 to 917. Printing categories rose widely while county printing largely moved out of the area. A bond issue of 30000 for road equipment construction passed the 50 percent threshold but failed to reach 60 percent, pending state ruling. Also local notes mention a pet death and anglers recalling weekend experiences.
Local gatherings include visits among Hiatt and Spring families with neighbors in Udell Moravia and Odell. A notable birthday list arose at the Brathren Sunday school event. Inclement weather limited attendance at a Sunday social. Communities report minor injuries from a porch fall and damage from a lightning strike on barns. Mrs Lloyd Johnson of Albia visited the Roscoe Argo home last week. Mrs Roy Moffatt and daughter Linda spent the weekend with Lea ter Hounley in Moravia. Mr and Mrs Bernard Kitterman and daughter Kay were Albia callers. Olive Moffatt and son Roy dined at the Joe Lucas Jr home. E F Stansberry visited Roy Moffatt Thursday. George Ostermier and Roy called at Pete Sulentic's Tuesday. Roy Moffatt visited Coy Swift Thursday. Kay attended Mrs Kitterman’s niece wedding in Moline Illinois Saturday. Plants should be watered as soon as they are set out.
Myr and Mrs. Lester White and family spent Thursday at the Ver Ploeg home near Albia. Circla met Thursday with Freda Hagerman. The road made it necessary to go by wagon. Mra. T. R. Gardnar spent Thursday at Russell attending the Federated Garden Club convention. Mr. and Mrs. Carl VanZante and family were shopping in Ottumwa Wednesday. Roy and Mrs. DuVall of Cheyenne visited the Ben Jones home Saturday evening. Lute Hiatt and Carl VanZante hosted Sunday dinner. John VanZante and Leater White visited Albia. Kenneth Gardner of Newton spent Father's Day with T. R. Gardner. Miss Mabel Shelquist of Indianapolis visited Ralph Shelquist’s home. Sunday visitors at the Shelquist home included Bill Ralston and baby of Conrad, and Robert and Francis Shelquist of Ottumwa. Ben Jones and family spent Sunday at John VanZante’s. Eston and Mrs. called at the T. R. Gardner home Monday evening. Your tractor air and parts serviced daily all summer, says Dale Hult.
