The local post office is undergoing improvements including plywood refinishing, clear varnish, woodwork painting, new fluorescent lighting, and upcoming lock boxes. Exterior painting is underway while equipment arrival is awaited.
In a tale of steady effort, a young rider’s desire for a bicycle grew over months. He saved, worked at the Union office, and even cleaned and repaired, cherishing the little metal treasure as a symbol of his ambition.
Pleasant Hill residents Mrs M E Dicks Mrs Earl Swift and Carolyn visited Merle Dicks. Fern Penfield called on Fern Callen and Pearl Free relatives. Russell Brown spent Sunday in Centerville. Richard Allen Wendell Cloyed hosted dinner with Mark Allen and others. The McAninch and Sheldon families visited Ottumwa and Des Moines. A weiner roast was hosted on the McAninch family’s new picnic ground.
At the New Hope vicinity the Bible school drew a full house as 89 enrolled students completed a three group program. Teachers included Marjorie Mellwain and Marybeth Turner for the youngest group, Juanita Dooley and Norma Hiatt for the middle group, and Thelma Phillips for the oldest. The event featured songs, Bible study, and handwork displays. A church basement exhibit showcased crayon and flannelgraph work as a $18.50 collection supported the school’s expenses.
The Wesley Sunday School elected officers led by Rob Woodward as superintendent and Virgil Dooley as assistant. Doris Woodward is pianist, Norma Hiatt secretary and treasurer, with Mae McDonald as assistant. Numerous social notes follow about visitors and local events around Centerville and nearby towns.

Mary Jo visited at the Hindman home Sunday afternoon and joined a Me Pleasant drive to the VanDorin reunion. Ward Shaw hosted six sons and their families at Mrs. Lowell VanDorin's Albia home Sunday. J C Lockman stopped by Dallas Faber's. Arthur Johnson and Charles Bettis visited Sunday afternoon. Bettis was ill. Sylvan VanDorin family and others helped W H VanDorin celebrate a birthday. Burdell Roberta and family visited Dallas Faber. Leo Marie enjoyed first Sunday. Leo VanDorin and Linds visited Ernsrad Johnson home Friday and Sunday evenings.
Cpl Donald Burkland from Fitzsimmons General Hospital Denver is on a fifteen day leave visiting his parents in Udell with his brother Howard. The group toured Chicago last weekend and also visited Indiana with Mr and Mrs Robert Burkland. Tuesday guests at Harold Spring's home included the Alvins and the Spring family, plus the Houser and Burkland households.
Readers in Odell will hear The Seymour Quartette at the Brethren church late Sunday evening for a program of gospel songs. A parade of weekend visitors and familiar names such as Shirley Salliday, Marsha White, Karen Moore, Darlene Spring, and the Henshaw family fills neighboring towns with news from Udell Centerville Moulton and Ottumwa.
