This week June 13 20 the Appanoose district celebrates achievements in soil conservation with George Sidles as chair and members R C Wilson and Arthur Streepy. The report notes widespread adoption of contour farming and strip cropping on farms near Jerome Centerville Moravia and Exline, plus demonstrations of waterway improvements and terrace construction by local farmers and SCS technicians.
Stanley Nervig farm forester for the State Conservation Commission in Albia offers help marking trees for cutting planning lumber marketing and tree planting. Contact the conservation office at the post office building in Albia for assistance.
The Shanghai club met on June 9 with Addie Free. Tele Christy won both door and contest prizes, while Doris N. Christy won the guess what. Doris N. Christy becomes a new member. A cooperative dinner followed. Attendees included Doris Christy, Iole Christy, Anna Landgrebe, Cora Murphy, Hazel, Mary Lou Rinehart, Allie Taylor, Addie Free, Bertha Overturf, and Neal Scott. Next gathering set for June 23 with Amy Hiner.
The Chariton River Ladies Aid held an all day meeting at Kathryn Martin's home in June. A cooperative luncheon was served, and embroidery work filled the day. Lois Martin led the business meeting as songs, poetry, scripture and prayers framed the gathering. Prizes were awarded to several attendees including Helen Printy Jessie Elam and Helen Tay or. Proceeds from the bake sale and patches funded church rug and carpeting. The next meeting will be at the parsonage on June 22 for an all day session.
The Women’s Society of World Service of the U B church met Friday evening at Mrs. Otha Taylor’s for the June gathering. Mrs. E G Hawk presided, roll call featured excerpts from the Evangel, and reports were given by the society’s secretaries. The lesson centered on missions in New Mexico with the theme All Children Can Be Taught, featuring readers and participants including Mrs. Zell Callen, Mrs. Hawk, Mrs. Almont Main, and Mrs. Ira Boyer, along with guest Mrs. Fannie Woolson of Mystic.
The Hap py Helpers 4-H club met at Joann Moore home on June 10 at 2:00 pm. President Charlotte McAninch led the call to order with members Joann Moore, Connie McAninch, Martha Potts, Martha McCord, Rosal ie Sneeden, Janice Mosley, Mary Mosley, and new member Janet Nash present. The secretary read the minutes.
At the meeting members heard the treasurer's report and a camp talk by Janice Mosley. Joann Moore and Martha Potts demonstrated "Measuring for a Patern" and after adjournment attendees sang songs. Refreshments were served to members two guests Janice and Vera Moore and Mrs K C Potts. Plans for rally day and our ai day meeting were discussed.
Taylor Township Farm Bureau met at New Hope schoolhouse. John Dodd introduced Attorney Ed Powers who discussed the importance of having a will. Powers displayed carved wooden items from Apapnoose county timber including a chair frames bowls and candlesticks. Sharon Argo reported on her camp trip.
