At 7 o clock a banquet will be served at the Methodist church complimenting our newly admitted brothers supper to be free to all members and nojourning brothers. The Moravia band program lists March activity including Bennett led pieces such as The Liberty Bell Sousa Stop and Mister Joe plus Overtture Ambition and March Fighting Irish. A Saturday pin ceremony honors Betty Luse and other students for four years of cornet study. band letters awarded to seniors and others.
Mrs. Cheater Broshar hosted the Progressive club on May 29 with an afternoon of bridge and refreshments. Guests included Mrs. George Firking and Mrs. Bert Turner. prizes went to Mrs. Wm. Young and Mrs. Ralph McDonough. On May 24 Mrs. George Winslet presided over a four table bridge with prize to Mrs. Paul Broshar. Other attendees listed. Memorial Day services noted with local attendees.
The Moravian softball squad went 2 1 in the past week, defeating Ottumwa Eagles 11 8 and Udell 9 6 while losing to Bloomfield 4 3. The Ottumwa game featured a Moravian surge after the second inning with big innings in the third sixth and eighth. Bloomfield pitcher Nelson held Moravian to one hit as Moravian drew walks to push runs in the third. Everett Morris started for Moravian against Udell and dominated Morton before the late frames, with Moravian adding runs in the fourth sixth and seventh to secure the win. A lineup of Has Beens featuring Doc Orelup and Paul Broshar will face the locals Friday night.
William Calvin Wren son of Mary Wren and brother of Claude Wren of Moravia bought the first poppy sold by American Legion Auxiliary members in Seattle. A World War veteran, he served with the civilian conservation corps before a forest fire injury left him a patient at the U S Marine Hospital with a photo showing him receiving the poppy.
Herschel Johnson of Moravia son of Mr and Mrs M H Johnson earned a Bachelor degree from Parsons College at Tuesday graduation exercises. W W Waymack editor of the Des Moines Register and Tribune spoke at the 81st commencement. Rev Herbert N Brock Way pastor at Fair Oaks Presbyterian Oak Park IL delivered the baccalaureate sermon Sunday morning. Mr Johnson transferred from Iowa State University.
Roast pork with brown gravy peas browned potatoes green onion macaroni and cheese cole slaw pie ice tea coffee served. Mr and Mrs Harvey Main were weekend visitors with their daughter Helen Main in Rockford Illinois.
Unofficial returns list candidates and vote tallies for governor lieutenant governor and state offices. Names include John K. Valentine Edward Breen Katie Miller Mullin Dan Mason W M Shaw J J Poarde Andrew Stewart La Verne Clark Thomas L Curran Frank M Murray Chas A Housh C A Zelimar Harry H Hagemann and Mike P Conway with scattered counts and percentages.
Memorial services were held at the Eslinger cemetery with a large crowd from near and far. The program featured songs, solos, recitations, poems, and piano accordion pieces. Attendees traveled from Ottumwa Des Moines Detroit and other towns including Melcher Moravia Knoxville and Dallas Center to honor the deceased.
The Twentieth Century club met for a noon luncheon at Mrs. A. E. Shull’s home with 15 members present. Officers were re-elected: President Mrs. John L. Dodd, Vice President Mrs. C. M. McFatridge, Secretary Mrs. Chas Coffin, Treasurer Mrs. H. E. Watts. The next meeting is the first Tuesday in October.
John Temple underwent a second operation on his eye Saturday in an effort to restore sight. He rests comfortably at University hospital in Iowa City. The first procedure was performed at Town City a week earlier on Monday.
George Wilson and John Valentines heavy margins set tone as Taylor township backed Wilson over H R Gross and Valentine over Edward Breen. County results show limited contests with Republicans prevailing in most positions and a few Democratic races for sheriff and 1942 board.
Announcement from Fulton Missouri reports the marriage of Miss Caroline Luke to Irvin H Smith on Saturday June 1. Mrs Smith formerly taught music in Moravian public schools several years ago.
