In Moravia and surrounding towns residents join Free Shows and band concerts while families visit kin across Udell Unionville Albia and Mil ton. Various names appear at homes, birthday parties, and Sunday gatherings with several relatives listed and a district conference planned in Milton as recovery continues.
The American Legion post organized a Memorial Day program at United Brethren Church. The service included a procession, readings from Margaret Cullen, a memorial address by Rev. Goo H. Suenkel, a trombone solo, and the Star Spangled Banner. A cemetery ceremony followed with wreaths, firing squad, taps, and a band. The event was described as one of the most impressive in years.
The Nash Stocker farm home north of Unionville was totally destroyed by a fire last week along with almost all of its contents. It was one of the better homes in the community and represents a heavy loss. There was no insurance. A defective gasoline stove is listed as the fire’s origin.
Moravia Novice shorthand team, after winning district honors, finished tenth in the state contest held in Des Moines. Representatives Velda Hiatt Elizabeth Sneed and Mary Coffin scored with Velda at 9434 placing 11th among 70 competitors from 21 districts. Moravia was the smallest town represented.
Mrs Laura Argo died at her Iconium home Monday morning at 8. Her age exceeded seventy and she was widely known in the community. Her husband Frank Argo died October 1930. Funeral services are Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Iconium home with burial in Iconium cemetery. An obituary will follow.
Local resident S. A. Stuckey announces candidacy for state representative to fill the vacancy caused by the death of 3 W. Rinehart. He notes long Appanoose County residence, pledges a square deal for all interests, tax reductions from the top downward, and support from Democratic voters at the June primary and convention.
The Review of Buckeye Arizona reports Clyde Wilson, a practicing lawyer in Buckeye, announced last week his candidacy for state representative on the Democratic ticket. Wilson, a Buckeye resident, seeks to represent the area in the state legislature.
The menu lists chicken noodles with gravy, mashed potatoes, warm rolls, salad, pickles, strawberry shortcake, coffee, and milk for the Friday meal./menu reflects classic comfort offerings and a dessert option.
The Moravia cemetery drew many visitors Sunday and Monday with crowds from afar. The grounds were well kept for the inspection thanks to caretaker Jess Funkhouser.
In Moravia the United Brethren revival draws larger crowds each service led by Evangelist E O Shepherd of Kansas City alongside Pastor Rev George H Suenkel. Evening sermons focus on old time religion as cure for sin and social tensions with Bible study and prayer sessions planned for afternoons.
The 20th Century Club held an at one o clock cooperative luncheon at the J H Sneed home. It was the last meeting of the year. Officers elected were president Mrs C C Cullers vice president Mrs Earl Brain secretary Mrs Stella Carter treasurer Mrs Hi ER Watts. Mrs R D Mu Cauley of Webster City was an out of town guest. The Horstman oil station on No 60 has been painted red white and blue.
Ruby Boyer age 45 died at her home north of Unionville Monday night after a period of illness. She leaves her husband F E Boyer, three daughters Icel Koehler Lula Stocker and Marjorie Boyer, one son Clifford Boyer, two grandsons eight brothers and sisters, and many relatives. Funeral was held Wednesday at the Unionville M E Church with Rev R C Rowe officiating. Burial in Unionville cemetery.
Pearl Morris of Douglas township announces candidacy for Republican nomination for member of the board of supervisors with a term starting January 1934. He is a lifelong farmer, aged 57, born on a Douglas farm. son of Oliver Morris. He notes 22 years on his current farm and 36 years farming on his own, and states he has never previously run for office. He cites opposition to a social worker and signals voters will face a choice if he is elected.
Ottumwa markets report prices for top hogs five dollars per half, spring chickens four dollars, old roosters two dollars, wheat 60 to 86 cents, oats 10 to 20 cents, rye 10 to 20 cents, butter 12 cents paid to packers, creamery butter 25 cents, eggs 10 cents, Iowa pottery six and a half cents per bushel, sugar 17 pounds, and a local note cites a voting date as Monday June 9th.
Carl Bivin suffered facial burns this week from a toy steam engine he was playing with Sunday. Alcohol was used as fuel and the device exploded as he attempted to light it. No permanent injuries are believed to have resulted.
The Union prints a December 1878 excerpt from The History of Appanoose County detailing 1846 pioneer merchant Spencer Wadlington’s cabin store near Centerville. A Christmas Eve celebration by local youths leads to a frosty, humorous scene as revelers sleep on deer skin bedding while frost thaws come morning.
W R Blakeslee of Centerville runs in the June 7 Republican primary for County Clerk of District Court. The candidate, age 47, notes 10 years in the county and 26 years as a taxpayer. He pledges to hire only non-relatives and to perform duties to the best of his ability. He asks for party support at the Primary ext Monday June 8th.
The column reports Sunday School attendance of 136 last week, aims for 200 next Sunday, and notes no evening service due to special meetings at the U B church. It lists Epworth League events, a district group meeting Friday at 10, about 125 attendees, and a district conference at Milton Thursday. Weeley preaches at 0 20 a m with Sunday School at 10 30 a m.
Church of Christ Bible School holds Divine Worship at 10:00 p m and Communion at 1:00 p m with a sermon on Spiritual Weapons In A World War. County Christian Endeavor Rally at 2:00 p m invites all to join, caravan from church at 6:30 p m. All Day Bible study moved to Thursday 8:00 p m. bring Bibles and notebooks.
