The Towan State Fair authorities book a rodeo for this year’s exposition. Local columns note pronunciation guidance and pro sourcing, mention soda and ice cream specials, and reference a parade idea using old fashioned buggies.
Honor students of Moravia’s graduating class of 1988 were announced by Supt O C Trelaw. Ruby Whitehead led with 94.75 percent earning valedictorian status, followed by Ardis Callen Velde Hiatt Arlene Dodd Maxine Tucker and Mary Coffin. Senior and junior rolls and perfect attendance names are listed along with sixth seventh and fourth grade honor data and a city park band concert note ahead of July 4th festivities.
A meeting of all officers of the Fourth of July celebration organization along with committee members and others interested will be held in the town hall Thursday evening June 1. President Sneed urges full attendance to transact important business and the session will begin at eight o'clock.
Mrs. Leo Smith has bought a tract formerly held by W. C. Starks on the north side of highway No. 60 just north of the former kittenball field. The Smiths intend to build a modern service station and will start work at once.
A large group including Mr. and Mrs. M. E. B. McDanel Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Glick Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Van Antwerp and others traveled to Abingdon Illinois to visit Frank Glick and family. Most siblings were present though Mrs. Mary McCumber and others were absent. Frank Glick, recently ill, showed improvement during the gathering.
Mr. and Mrs. Jan Black entertained at a Sunday family dinner listing numerous relatives including J. L. Black and siblings with spouses and children from Moulton Centerville Rockwell City Tulaga Oklahoma and other communities. The gathering featured extended family ties across several households.
The O M T P club reports its next regular meeting on June 5 and a memorial arrangement. Norma Lea Firkins reports a May 28 meeting with a new constitution and three new members. Next meeting is June 12 with Leta Behrens. Moravia homes show fresh paint and pride in well kept premises, led by Fred Buckmaster.
Beacon City officials announce that no reservations are available before June 18 and those wanting to enroll for June 18 must enroll now. The paper urges readers to consider the Beacon City plan for attending the World’s Fair and to read the advertisement inside for details and timing.
A Moravia Union retrospective recalls Joe L. Smith dying at his Main Station home after a paralytic stroke and Civil War veteran status. It notes Ed Al Main’s Livery Barn turned Feed Barn, Towe’s first primary election amid low voter understanding, and lists Republican and Democratic nominees in Taylor township along with visiting Dorothy Reich from Eagle Grove for summer with Stella Reich.
Dorothy Wilson, trombone, joins the 800-piece Farm Bureau band in Ottumwa for a rehearsal and concert. The group plans to play at the World's Fair in Chicago for three days, with Miss Wilson traveling to Chicago in June for the tour.
About 85 percent of A Century of Progress projects at the 1933 Chicago exposition are free with admission, totaling $26 million in privately built pavilions and state displays. Visitors of all ages can explore dozens of major buildings and hundreds of exhibits from around the world, including the Communications Building and Hall of Science, with many experiences offered at no extra cost.
The Moravia Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary will host a county meeting for Appanopas county units this week at 2:00 PM. County president Mrs. John Cam bron of Centerville will lead the session with guest of honor Mrs. Lewis Spivak Ottumwa district vice committeewoman. Local unit president Mrs. Gael Broshat urges all Auxiliary members to attend. regular Moravia Unit meeting is moved to Monday evening May 8th.
Memorial Day 1998 observances included flag placements at Moravia and Satem cemeteries by veterans and Auxiliary volunteers, a church service at Church of Christ with Rev. Seath addressing Christian patriotism, wreaths lit by girls at the graves, and a march to Moravia cemetery for tributes. Wreaths, taps, and firing squad honors followed, led by Chester Brosher with a procession back to town.
The Moravia Union sponsors present an Exposition on Enchanted Island with a five acre playground for children. General admission is free to amusements while individual rides and shows charge small fees. The event features baked chicken dressing mashed potatoes corn custard lettuce salad jelly and coffee. Per year pricing noted for sponsors.
The Moravia band begins its 1983 concert season inviting Mr and Mrs Reader to the first show and all remaining concerts. A larger band will perform summer concerts, augmented by former town band members, likely numbering 40 to 50. Large crowds attend these weekly Saturday night concerts, offering chances to meet many friends.
Moravia band director Dale Garis announced a Friday evening practice at 8 o clock in the school gymnasium. He urges all band members to attend promptly to ensure a productive session.
Moravia merchants offer fine quality goods at good prices and invite residents to attend the season opener concert. The Epworth League of the Methodist church in Moravia elected new officers last Sunday night. Elected or reelected were President Leona Kaster First Vice President Jackie Wanler Second Vice President Maxine Tisse Cape Vice President Maxine Du Vall Fourth Vice President Dale Schreiner Secretary and Treasurer Lorence Gardner Pianist Leona Kaster Chorister Norma Leo Firkins News Reporter Madge DuVall. After the election Beulah Bishop sang a vocal solo.
Word from relatives says Clarence Vosburgh of Buckeye Arizona is recovering after eye removal surgery in Phoenix. A metal shard from steel chiseling last summer remained in the eye until an X ray showed the object still present, making removal necessary. He has cut over 700 net bushels of cotton this year on his Buckeye ranch.
