Stories of fugitives and a 19th century mischief tale

The article recalls covert aid to enslaved people fleeing Missouri for Canada via Cincinnati stations during the Civil War era. It debunks romantic legends about Luther Holbrook and J. H. B. Armstrong, and authenticates a winter 1862-63 event in Pregeant Township where a sixteen-year-old slave sought help and was sheltered then guided toward liberty, while horses and escape plans are recounted with caution.
